I think you're misunderstanding something here. The word is used mainly as a joke or as a way to show off what character you like atm, and most people change their "waifus" the moment something new gets hyped. There are some extreme cases when guy marries a dakimakura etc., but usually it's not that kind of attachment. Think of it as a synonym for "my favorite female character".
And since we're at it, I don't see how being attached to "some generic anime char" is any more stupid than being attached to anything else. How is it any different?
