Inspirational Books Like ... - The Godfather, Mario Puzo- great story about living in real crime world and managing family matters, not being naive or too tolerant. For me - very inspirational. Much better than the movie, which is too short imho.
Ima in for Legacy of Kain: Defaince or Mutazione.

I'm just here to join the conversation and try to contribute with my sci-fi readings, not for the games.

As a sci-fi book that might fall into the feel-good category, "I, Robot", a classic by Isaac Asimov, might fit in. The robots here aren't trying to dominate people, and the interesting thing is to see humans trying to understand their behavior.

One that's a bit fantasy and a bit sci-fi, which is a classic comic book, is "Moonshadow". Despite having some dark moments, it never loses its lightness, is extraordinarily beautiful and brings many reflections on life. The protagonist's naive view of the world is always very captivating.

I saved the best for last: anything written by Ted Chiang! I have read his two books of short stories, "Stories of Your Life and Others" and "Exhalation: Stories", and the way he manages to express human experiences, feelings and desires in fantasy and fiction stories is simply spectacular in a way I have never seen before.

I hope I have helped and I look forward to hearing your opinion if you decide to read one of these :)

I will tell you I have read Exhalation: Stories and it was life saver, it saved me from depression most likely. Thank you soo much, I will keep note of Moonshadow and for I, Robot, is it worth reading after the movie ?

I, Robot is definitely still worth reading. The book is a collection of short stories that begins Asimov's robot series. The movie doesn't do the book justice, in my opinion. It only takes a few details from each story, but the plots of the movie and the book are very different.

I have prime so I'm not responding for any game but wanted to add a sci fi book I think gives some deep perspective on life itself, it's not exactly "cozy" but some character clealy have a heartwarming feeling and it's really worth your time imo. It's "Too like the lightning" by ada palmer
It's lore heavy but also full of action.

When I was younger I read "Manual of The Warrior of Light" by Paulo Coelho. It is a collection of inspirational thoughts and stories. Back then I felt a little bit lost within my suroundings and these stories helped me to handle my struggle and to give meaning to the simple things in life. I know this does not describe much but this book is hard to explain.

I'd be interested in Syberia: World Before, Saints Row: Third Remastered and Mutazione.

I am not raising my hand for the games but I'll definitely be checking it for the books. Very interested in the recommendations.
Dystopia is way more common than utopia when it comes to books and while I enjoy a good bit of deep dark story, it's great to have something that provides a little bit of light and air in these times.

Amazing books I always recommend are books by Robin Hobb.
The Liveship Traders trilogy in particular is escapism at its finest and while it is full of elements that appear in other fantasy books like dragons, pirates, magic and others, it uses them in a way that's unique to great effect.
The first book in the trilogy is Ship of Magic
They are very thick books but once you start reading you probably won't want to leave the world they build so you'll be grateful they are not regular pocket sized books.
Even though they are not exactly light reading, the dark moments are always balanced because it's the nature of that universe. And the characters are layered and complex so even the antagonist is fascinating.

Sorry for the long post. I won't be offended if you skip it though

First, I'm not really interested in the GA items but if you are still ok with me dropping some sci-fi / fantasy book recs, then great... otherwise pretend you can't see this comment ;-P

Second, I'm not entirely sure what you are looking for when you say "feel good" (like if you mean slice-of-life stuff that completely avoids conflicts and combat .... or just normal adventure stuff minus depressing shit like grimdarks)... so will try to give a brief summary and let you deal with it. I will also admit that I have gotten very lazy and admit that most all of these also have audiobooks unless otherwise noted. I'm also going to try and mostly stick with stuff written in the last 20 years instead of older works that are already well covered elsewhere.

Btw if you want LOTS of really good, FREE stories that are 100% LEGAL and with consent of the author(s), you can also check out royalroad. Many of these started out there and moved to Amazon after the author wrote enough chapters to make a full book and then cleaned up the editing a bit. Order isn't important... just whatever order I remembered them in

Sci-fi

  • The Martian by Andy Weir (Goodreads): Yes, the book that the Matt Damon movie was based on. Basically, a hard sci-fi about the first manned landing on Mars. Shit goes sideways and team thinks MC is dead... he wakes up and has to figure out how to survive, call home, and hold out until help can come back. There are 2 versions of the audiobook.. the good one which is no longer sold on audible that was narrated by R.C. Bray and the garbage one narrated by Wil Wheaton. Don't hate Wil as a person and if you just simply want your books read out loud, he's better than most robo voices.. but if you want narrators that actually have different voices and act things out, then IMHO WW's narrating abilities are utter dog 💩. The R C Bray version might exist somewhere on the high seas or if you are really lucky, your library might have a copy, but for everybody else, I would recommend just going for kindle / paperback versions and skipping the WW audiobook entirely.
  • The Hard Luck Hank series by Steven Campbell (book 1 on Goodreads): This one is 3 parts comedy, 2 parts serious story. Its about a somewhat dimwitted but lovable mutant that works as an underworld thug on a space station and the hijinks that he finds himself in. If you go for the audiobooks, the narrator does a perfect voice for the MC. Great series and had me laughing quite a bit.
  • The Expeditionary Force series by Craig Alanson (book 1 on Goodreads): This is more traditional space opera but written in a more modern style... meaning less time spend on describing the view and with a sprinkle of modern pop culture references. An important character is introduced midway through the first book and the comedic relief picks up strongly from that point on. While this is mainly a serious story, it has plenty of comedy relief throughout.
  • *The Dungeon Crawler Carl series by Matt Diniman (book 1 on Goodreads): aliens land and kill most of the planet. Everybody who's left gets thrown into a death game that this cycle happens to be in the form of an AI-controlled "dungeon dive". Serious storyline but with a solid comedic relief as well. Very fun read.

Swords and Magic Fantasy

  • The Spellmonger series by Terry Mancour (book 1 on Goodreads): I will say that there are a couple scenes in books 1 and 2 (maybe 3? not sure.. been awhile) that are borderline ero stuff. Not generally a prude but I do generally prefer to avoid erolit.... if you can overlook those in the early books, that kind of thing is basically non-existent later in the series and this is probably one of the best modern fantasy series I have read. When considering the series overall, I personally rank it above Brandon Sandserson's works despite disliking those few cringy scenes in books 1 (and 2?). There are LOTS of characters in this series. If you like a well developed world with lots of rich characters, this is great. But unlike Game of Thrones, you also won't be depressed about good guys being constantly killed off. And unlike Wheel of Time, you won't fall asleep while the author spends thousands of words describing the scenery.
  • Mother of Learning series by nobody103 aka Domagoj Kurmaić (book 1 on Goodreads / entire series on RR). No, this isn't about anybody's mother. Title is based on the phrase "Repetition is the mother of learning". This story is about a young mage who is stuck in a timeloop. One of my all time favs. Sometimes marketed as litrpg but I don't recall it having any stats (and I actually dislike if not outright hate 95+% litrpgs). Note: There ARE audiobooks for this series but the narrator does a VERY poor job with female voices (especially the younger sister's); if that would bother you, kindle/paperback might be the better route.
  • Mark of the Fool series by J M Clarke (book 1 on Goodreads): One of those "divinely chosen hero" stories but with a twist... he ends up getting a holy mark from his god that actually hinders him and prevents him from fighting, casting magic, or even defending himself. Despite this, he is able to find ways to workaround this limitation. Probably a crap description but I still get really excited every time a new book drops.
  • The Hedgewizard series by Alex Maher (book 1 on Goodreads: I think this might be technically marketed as a litrpg (bc it has "dungeon cores" and an in-world ranking system for magic users) but I don't consider it one. I think of it as a coming of age progression fantasy about a wizard whose master dies and who then has to learn to defend for himself. But unlike most coming of age stories about wizards, this MC isn't some naive 13 yo who or incapable dullard.

Other:

  • If you enjoy Xainxia (a category of martial arts fantasy with ridiculously powerful ki/chi/magic/etc-based attacks... probably most famous example would be something like Dragon Ball Z), there's a satire series called Beware of Chicken by CasualFarmer (book 1 on Goodreads). Really good. If you aren't that into Xianxia, probably some of the humor might be missed but you might still enjoy it as just a fun story. Premise is that MC is training to become a martial artist and is beat half-to-death by someone higher in the clan and his soul merges with a reincarnated Canadian who takes over as MC and promptly "nopes" out of the martial arts world for a quiet life of farming. There's still plenty of fun anyway.
  • If you like super-hero stories, The Perfect Run series by Maxime J Durand (book 1 on Goodreads) is also pretty damn awesome. Another "stuck in a timeloop" premise (apparently I'm kind of draw to that lol)
  • The Paranoid Mage series by Inadvisably Compelled (book 1 on Goodreads) modern day so I guess technically that makes it Urban Fantasy. Basically, dude finds out about the supernatural and the authorities test him to discover that he's some very a rare kind of mage - he then (correctly) assumes that everyone is out to get him and goes off the grid. Note: There ARE audiobooks for this series but the narrator does a VERY poor job with female voices (especially the eventual love interest's); if that would bother you, kindle/paperback might be the better route.

I would highly recommend it to anyone who enjoyed The Martian.

Agreed. Artemis wasn't bad either.

Side note: for any body unfamiliar with Andy Weir, he seems to be more about standalone novels than series. Which is probably good if you don't like long series or just like having a defined ending in sight (GRRM and Patrick Rothfuss fans can likely relate lol)

This is definitely a book that can uplift your life and help you get through tough times. Before the Coffee Gets Cold by Toshikazu Kawaguchi is a heartwarming and bittersweet novel set in a small, mysterious café in Tokyo that allows customers to travel back in time—but only until their coffee gets cold. Through four interconnected stories, the book explores themes of love, regret, and the importance of cherishing the present.

I rarely cry while reading, but this book moved me to tears—even on my second read, I still found myself sobbing uncontrollably. It’s a beautiful reminder that while we can’t change the past, we can still find closure, understanding, and the courage to move forward.

"Little Prince/ Jonathan Livingston Seagull" - These two are among my favourite books, so I feel called to mention other books that made me feel things, even it's not similar to the first two books at all.

John Ajvide Lindqvist - Handling the Undead. <- Sorry, can't really remember why, but since it's still burnt into my core almost 20 years after reading it then it must've been great, should probably read it again soon :D
Fredrik Backman - Anxious People. <- So I was reading this book while my marriage was starting to fall to pieces, I escaped to the docks and sat by the river and read this, and it felt so human and I felt so alive through this book, sometimes I even had to wipe some tears. Life is.. faulty, humans are full of faults. But here we are.

Oh wait, there is one book quite similar in vibes to Little Prince and JLS for me, it's called The Cat Who Taught Zen by James Norbury :)
I bought that book during my bleakest darkest moments sometime in the past two years, searching for just an ounce of reasons to stay.
And I am here.

Last edit, I swear: I don't want anything or need anything, besides the opportunity to share some books that has made an impact on me, for reasons known or unknown.

My favourite books are
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zen_and_the_Art_of_Motorcycle_Maintenance by Robert M. Pirsig

and from non-fiction:

any of Yuval Noah Harari's books on society, change and history https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yuval_Noah_Harari

"Gödel Escher Bach" by Douglas Hofstaedter https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/G%C3%B6del,_Escher,_Bach , it's about the nature of information and its role in logic, about meta-layers that can lead to confusion and paradoxes, and in effect to know about these things helps to keep a clean head and clear communication and a sane view of the world.

I would be interested in Figment 2 but count me as low priority. :).

+1 on Harari but I'd start with 'Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind' and work up to 'Nexus'.

'Unstoppable Us: How Humans Took Over the World' is a child friendly version of the Sapiens content and is heavy on the evidence and light on any suggestions as to why (Not that 'Sapiens' is either).

One of the best fantasy series I have ever read is Tad Williams "Osten Ard" series consisting of the following books:
The Dragonbone Chair
Stone of Farewell
To Green Angel Tower
It's the classic hero's journey, but it's so colorful, vibrant and captivating, simply magical, you'll love it. Other people write better summaries than I do, you might wanna read some reviews ;)

Also everything Robin Hobb ever wrote. And Guy Gavriel Kay.

I'd be interested in one of these: GameDec DE, Syberia or Legacy of Kain: Defaince

I mostly read graphic novels, so I hope this recommendation is okay ^^"

The Tea Dragon Society is a short graphic novel (the first in a series of three) that I think fits the fantasy/cozy genre both because of the story and the art-style. The story revolves around the main character learning about Tea Dragons, and learning how to take care of them. Tea Dragons are a species of cute tiny dragons, that when taken care of, grow leaves on their horns that can be used to make magical tea. Warning: it does have some sad parts here and there.

The cozy/soft art-style is what drew me in, but I also just love the overall concept, and god are those dragons adorable. Even the conflict in this story is solve in sweet ways. Example from the beginning: dogs had a tiny dragon cornered, and the main character realized they were starving, so she gave them the food she had. A little disappointed she didn't take them home with her because god were they cute

It's just a sweet feel-good story that, when I found it, was a nice break from all the stressful conflict-filled books I was reading hehe. I've been putting off reading the second and third books (have way too many books to read), but I think I'll read them tonight ^^

I would love for a chance at Gamedec if still available! c: Been trying to win this for ages now :v Never mind, I managed to get it elsewhere :D

I'm not interested in any game I just wanted to spread the suffering. ❤️
