Right, because the ONLY reason people are buying the game is for the TF2 items.
The TF2 items (and Civ V) are incentives to buy the game early and from Steam.

I don't think so.

Highly doubt it. The pre-order bonuses are mainly used to draw customers to a particular vendor. Sort like the different bonuses you get if you buy from Best Buy, Amazon, Wal-Mart, or Gamestop when it comes to console games.

Naw, tf2 pre-purchase awards are only for pre-orders made directly through Steam.

I'm not just talking about the tf2 one. There's also Civ 5.

You won't get an extra copy of Civ 5 as well unless you order directly from Steam. AFAIK you'll only get the Elite Soldier Pack dlc if you pre-order through GMG/Gamersgate.

  1. Wait for game to go on sale in a couple months.
  2. Use the difference in cost to buy some small games or TF2 keys.
  3. Trade that stuff for the TF2 items.
  4. ???
  5. Break even!

Unless the websites state that the game contains those pre order bonuses, it won't. Remember, they'll be sending you a key which is taken from a box which is delivered on the release day. So in this case, I can safely say that those bonuses will not be included with retail versions of the game. You're essentially just reserving a retail copy from a shop, it's not a Steam pre-order.

It's not taken from a box. The keys are sent by the publishers.
Obviously I'm only talking about GMG and GamersGate here.

Really? Where'd you hear that? :o

Not that getting keys straight from the publisher would make it any different.

Here for instance.
GMG and GamersGate are official retailers and get their keys from the publishers, as opposed to websites like G2play or IntKeys which indeed buy game boxes and send you a picture of the game code (which is illegal but "tolerated" apparently).

Also, this will answer directly OP's question.
