So looking to upgrade my 4 year old rig, plan to sell it to cover a portion of the cost of the new rig.
Current Rig
MOBO: ASUS P5KPL-VM
CPU: Intel Q9300
RAM: PC2-6400, DDR2-800 (4GB)
GPU: ASUS GTX460 1GB
PSU: Generic rebrand, 800Watt
CASE: NZXT Tempest. 6 case fans
4x HDDs

Plan to sell everything but the GPU, case, HDD and maybe the optical drive.

GPU: Probably keep my current one and SLI it with another 460.

Yes we have :P. Running stock speeds atm because of some instability. Max I can OC to is 2.9 - 3.0GHZ. Current mobo is crap though, the chipset only supports 4GB, a single PCIEx16, and all my sata ports are used.

yeah my plan is to buy a new processor and the same day a bigger/more efficient pc case. the only thing is how do i know if my motherboard is crap?

in the end buying this crappy $400 pc to start with and thinking i can frankenstien it up to perfection hasnt felt worth it. makes me want to just save up and buy a gaming pc.

i have amd now and i want to switch over to intel motherboard btw. or is it not worth the switch.

Depends on what you need it for. For 400 you could get most of my set up. Half the ram and reuse your PSU and youd be golden.

I have the same mobo, same CPU, nearly the same RAM and a gtx 670. I've heard good and bad things about OCZ psus, not sure about this one specfiically. It looks good to me though. Should handle 2 460s no problem. As for heatsink, while IB does run hotter than SB, it's manageable. I'm at 4.4ghz @ 1.22v and max stress testing in prime95 I see 80-82c, which is still in the safe zone as far as stress testing temps go, but when doing anything like rendering/gaming, etc etc my temps never go above 65c, which is perfectly fine. It's all on a cheap lil $30 evo I can't recommend that beast of a cooler enough.

well if I may...
that processor is great, but if you don't mind spending a little more.. up to like $300 the i7-2600K is a bit better, or the i7-2700K also better at $300

Spending $100 more for Hyperthreading which will not ever or incredibly rarely be used is dumb.

+1. Better off throwing $100 away, it'll be just as useful.

well lets see, better benchmarks.. so I doubt its only hyper-threading, it would be easier to over clock because like Desidiosus said, a Sandy Bridge doesn't get as hot, has a slightly bigger cache (not a big deal I know..), and the benchmarks on it at stock speed score 7820 while the i5-3570K 6380.
which I myself find hyper-threading useful since I use VMs from time to time and they can be a bit slow.

also if you wanted to save $50 anyway you could get a i7-2600 the version that isn't unlocked, so it is just as good at stock speed but can't be overclocked as much.

the i7-2600 is actually 10 dollars more (292) then the k version which is 285 from what I see. The i5-3570k is 215. If you guys can find better deals, please let me know.

hmm odd futuremark said it was like $250, so I didn't bother to search myself because most of the prices are fairly accurate.
oh well, can't always go by whats listed..

1+, the i7 has no noticeable gains in games(2-3fps at most).

I think I will stick with the 3570k atm. The price/performance is just too good to pass up. Thanks though.

If you're planning to overclock the CPU then you should probably get a Sandy Bridge instead of Ivy. Ivys get a lot hotter (as much as 20°C) than Sandys when overclocked.

OCZ seems to have bad products over time. If you can I would go for a Neo Eco 620w, SeaSonic 620/650, HIVE 650w, or Earthwatts. 8GB of ram is more than enough, though, FYI. As for a CPU heatsink, pick up a Hyper 212+ Evo. You don't need to OC it to 4.5 Ghz either.

I just pulled the trigger on the HX 750(I got it on amazon for $138 final price, vs newegg's final price of $160(after tax and shipping) It'll house a 670 SLI in the future, and even for that much GPU power, you could skate on by with 650w. For PSUs, the best brands you'll usually hear are Seasonic, Corsair, and XFX. But most Corsair/XFX PSUs are just re labeled Seasonic PSUs. Seasonic is truly the god father of prestine PSU quality. But they do get more expensive than the competition. If you're in budget, the HX 750 will last you for a long while, PC parts are getting more and more efficient, so unless you plan on tri/quad SLI'ing/CF'in high end cards, there's really no dual GPU config out there that a quality 750w won't handle, even oc'd. The HX is a fully modular PSU, and you do pay the premium for that, but if you don't mind a lot of wires you don't need a modular then, it's all preference. I can't stress enough to not skimp on a PSU, get the best you can that's in your budget, it's the heart of the system. I'm in the process of RMA'ing my 2 week old PSU because I got greedy and got an off brand and didn't properly do enough research on it, and I guess I'm just plain unlucky lol.

Anyways, you can just read reviews. That OCZ ZT 650w seems to be just average, and can only output 75% of its advertised wattage. Review. I wouldn't get that one. Stick to brands with known great track records, again the 3 I listed above. It's up to you how much wattage, and whether you want modular/non modular.

NZXT TEMPEST EVO. 2 140mm's on top, 2 120mm's in the front, 1 120mm on the side, and 1 120mm on the back. Room for 8 HDDs, 3 optical drives. Cable management is crap though.

I second this...
you should pass ivybridge and take sandy.
2500k still very good for decent gaming and cheaper than your choice.

rather than buy another 460, I suggest you should get some hd 7770 or 7850 if possible.
buying those latest vga will save bucks because no need to buy new PSU.

I wouldnt need a new PSU just for a set of 460s since my original one is rated for 800watts. Dual 460s would beat a single 7850...

If you don't care about electricity bill or such than that's fine. You can saving money by sell your old PSU and buy 500W~650W PSU. Green power...

Most people would recommend a stronger single GPU, as it leaves an upgrade path open. Two 460's more or less = a 580, so when you'll want to upgrade from your two 460's you'll have to get rid of both. I personally would get a stronger single card, no chance of micro stutter, less power consumption/noise, and again, the upgrade path.

You can buy memory for under $40 and 1333-1600MHz means nothing. Never get any with teeth.
