They can, but without telling what aspect they need to be compared, it's useless. They are fruit, but other than that they have barely anything in common. This is the meaning of the proverb - not that they can't be compared, but they shouldn't, because you will only find differences. It makes sense if you don't take it literally, like you shouldn't do that with most of the proverbs to begin with.
