I'm put off the game by that Steam reviews and the public opinion about the game seem to focus on the art. Is the actual game as great as the art? Is the plot good? What is its theme exactly? Are the choises truly reasonable, do they cause things with reason? Does the experience draw out?

I just got it with the summer sale and had completed it last night. It actually is a very good example of a visual novel because there are a lot of different ways to accomplish things. There are four different endings and each ending has multiple variants to it. The variants are determined by Cinders' actions and your choices as far as her personality goes. I have all the achievements, but am nowhere near finding all the ending variants. And the choices can indeed change things and influence how other characters perceive Cinders. It is actually possible to get Lady Carmosa (the evil stepmother) and Cinders' stepsisters to treat her with a lot more respect and they get along well in the ending. It's also very possible for Cinders to end up as an evil queen.
It is very much based off the Cinderella fairytale though, but you do have three possibilities for endings besides the fairytale one of marrying the prince and one of those possibilities is downright depressing. There are also two other love interests besides the prince, one is a knightly type and one is a merchant. The overall theme to it is pretty much taking control of your own destiny and being willing to do what is needed to change your life for the better.
Overall, great game, but you definitely would have to enjoy a visual novel to enjoy it. It's a great example of the genre but if someone is bothered by reading a lot of text and clicking on a choice to make, Cinders isn't the game for them. The art is definitely gorgeous, but it really just makes a great experience even better.

Actually, couldn't have said it better than ladynadiad. Haven't found all the endings yet but I can guess based on the Rewards/Trophies. It's Cinderella but gives you the choice to take control instead of getting just a fairytale ending. The choices were pretty reasonable and they depend on what you have chosen previously. There are indications while you play showing you that something happening when you see those is a result of a choice you've made (and to show you that it might have been different in another playthrough). Also, you can get each ending with different "modifiers", meaning different love interest, friends, behaviour characteristic.
The art is really good, I assume that is why the reviews focus on that. Also, moacube have another game on Greenlight right now with similar art, Solstice I believe is the name.

Bought tier 2 myself as soon as I could ...
still trying to decide if I should put up the other $6 for Mercenary Kings

Cinder looks like fun, but too many repeats for me to drop $6 on. I'm sure it'll be bundled again or $2.50 in a sale down the road.
