The Easter Island Challenge!

Where: Southeastern Pacific Ocean, at the southeasternmost point of the Polynesian Triangle, in Chile.
What: An island known for their outstanding stone carved heads known as "Moái's"

Interesting facts:

  1. The first human inhabitants of Rapa Nui (the Polynesian name for Easter Island; its Spanish name is Isla de Pascua) are believed to have arrived in an organized party of emigrants around 300-400 A.D.

  2. The greatest evidence for the rich culture developed by the original settlers of Rapa Nui and their descendants is the existence of nearly 900 giant stone statues that have been found in diverse locations around the island.

  3. Averaging 13 feet (4 meters) high, with a weight of 13 tons, these enormous stone busts–known as moai–were carved out of tuff (the light, porous rock formed by consolidated volcanic ash) and placed atop ceremonial stone platforms called ahus.

  4. The biggest statue found dating to the middle period measures about 32 feet tall, and consists of a single block weighing about 82 tons (74,500 kilograms).

  5. Easter Island is very far away. Its closest inhabited neighbour is Pitcairn, 2,000km (1,200mi) to the west while the nearest continental land lies in Chile at a distance of 3,700km (2,300mi). If we are traveling on a boat at 28 MPH from both areas, we'd reach the island in around 2 or 4 days respectively!

  6. The huge statues have been moved before! For 18 KM's, across the island without the use of wheels, cranes or large animals. It's still unknown the method used for such a feat, though.

  7. A Finnish tourist once stole a moai ear. Named himself Marko Kulju, had to issue a public apology through a Chilean newspaper shortly after his capture and had to pay the fine of 17,000 USD. He got off easily as he would have faced seven years in prison!

GOOD LUCK on the challenge! Create for us some breath-taking masterpieces of Easter Island for some awesome GA wins!

How can 82 tons be 74,500 kilograms? Real ton is 1000 kilograms. >/< Duh, americans has shitty system of units.
About methods of moving - you may google about Pavel Pavel. In 80s he showed how 17 men could move real 10-tons statue using only rudimentary technologies.

Yeah! While I was looking for facts, a couple of scientists were proving how to move those statues. But it required a ton of practice and strong ropes for that to happen! :)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YpNuh-J5IgE

As you can see, they are using timed "chants", so they can keep the movement rhytm going! :)

It's all fine! Unless it has to be right on this week? :/

And about the statues... They were probably moved there a very long time for tourists to see, or have been there ever since! Nobody knows! ;)

Something I made quickly myself in Paint. Not very fancy, of course.

I suck at Art myself, but hey! It's better than a first grader! xD

Apologies if it's not fully made, I have no idea how to paint the rest without doing some manual work, and I can't do it for now... Got some chores to do :(

Lol, it's a pronounciation pun.

Try to say "Is statue?"

Is Sta = Is that

Tue = You

Terrible, to be honest :)

Some news.

Since this is the final week of challenges we're extending the deadline by 3 days. New deadline

That also means we can have 1 week of voting, where I'm able to be there at both the start of the week and end of the week. Otherwise the voting would have ended on Xmas day when I'm not at home. We feel it's better to extend the deadline of entries than to extend the deadline of voting. More submissions is better, right?
