With the political climate being what it is in the US, no sane country would want to alienate the world's best ranked military by giving us open support. I have some hopes that Europe, with the push of France and Germany's rearmament plan, would help us in the long term. But that means fostering alliances right now, advocating for us being the last line of defense against the US, not the first one, etc. Nothing of this is being done, probably because of the election cycle. Once it's over, hopefully we'll see more movement on the international relations front and, with time, some support.

I agree that organizations such as NATO should serve as deterrents, and I think they do. Russia has complained about NATO for ages now, which means it's probably doing its job. But nothing in NATO's charter articles is there to explicitly prevent a member state from attacking another member state. Most experts seem to agree that in such a case Article 5 should prevail, but it's unclear enough that other members states could try and weasel out of it.

You edited your text after I replied to it, so my reply now seems a bit off. My original idea was the following: other nations are trying to safeguard themselves first and foremost and unless we start strengthening our bonds with the countries we want to call our allies, then when push comes to shove, they will abandon us. I still think that point stands.

NATO's only task is to confront the USSR (Russia).
