You could not pay me enough to install Norton on my PC.

Thanks for sharing though :)

There's nothing wrong with the corporate version of Norton though.

Having had to manage it for years at my old job I wouldn't say that there's nothing wrong with it, but it's definitely in a different league than the home product line.

Why is it that bad?

I know that it got so resource intensive I couldn't open a folder without waiting several seconds.

It is notorious (kind of like McAfee) for having false positives and deciding to delete your files without your permission or knowledge; the false positives tend to take the form of game .exe's so you can imagine how much of a pain that becomes? Oh and yeah, it offers you very little control generally over it's settings and adding files to exceptions so you can't even argue with it if you tried.

This is just from my general experience with it. I got sick of it deleting files without my permission so I just got rid of it.

Thanks, but based on my past experiences with Norton products, I'd rather have no antivirus program than use Norton again.

Nah a more accurate image would be Norton deleting the bike while he was riding it.

Lol no thanks. I've been avoiding it since 2003. Windows defender/MSE + MBAM have been adequate.

No thanks, even at the price of free it's still not worth it.

Some site offered some Norton free too but it turned out as a virus. I won't risk :)

Is the site safe?

Probably safe, but it's a bit of a joke. Their freebies are just taken from elsewhere online and then they "sell" them to you for free. Chances are high you can get the exact same deal somewhere else.

From the sounds of this, being a 6-month licence, it's probably just a free OEM version from some computer maker.

Furthermore, please take note this freebie is really an extended trial of Norton AntiVirus 2014 instead of an actual license (so yeah, just a sneaky way to lure you to install the trial)

" This is a 1-user 6-month license, for home and business use

Take note this freebie is really an extended trial of Norton AntiVirus 2014 instead of an actual license. In terms of features and protections, there are no differences between a trial and a real license -- you get all the same features, updates, and protection. The difference arises in who can install it. "

People still use Norton?! What's wrong with good old Windows Defender? Never failed me...

It's better than nothing and extremely lightweight (plus Microsoft hasn't dropped it like they did MSE), but there's no reason to not play it safe and get some extra protection just in case, especially when there are so many free alternatives out there.

If you play it safe and set up a hosts file, disable Java, and use a sandboxed browser, you'll probably be fine with just Windows Defender. Just don't assume that the other people who use your computer or host websites are just as careful as you.
