GalCiv2+expansions or Space Empires IV (V sucked). Or, if you really want to go back to one of the founders of "space 4x"... Ascendancy.

ascendancy sucked do not even bother with it, the AI is terrible.
If you want a decent sim game and to go back further get masters of orion I or II. both on GOG, and if you want to get really old school look at Stellar Conquest the board game from the 70s that Masters of orion used for game mechanics.

yep pretty much what I said, you get both on gog for one low price, or you can wait for it to go on sale. Just don't bother with ascendancy.

Depends on what kind of a space strategy you want - if you are not into 4x then try Homeworld 2.

Gal Civ 2 is my favorite so far. I bought Endless Space but have yet to get into it, although I heard it's good. I love space strategy games too :)

FTL faster than light

Thats a rogue-like, its too dependent on luck rather then micro-management or skill.
You can play through it find the best weapons/best +scrap events, or you can play through it and be out of fuel every few jumps/get spit roasted by an EMP happy ship & meteors.

Though I applaud the suggestion of FTL, an amazing game.

"Strategy" is a little broad...

Permalink

not really, OP is clearly seeking strategy games on Space. There are several sub genres for strategy like RTS, grand strategy and turn-based.

Not sure this helps OP much since its not strategy.

If the idea of Freelancer has sparked your interest you should also consider the X series such as X3: Reunion or X3: Terran Conflict. Like Freelancer but an assload more complicated.

Freelancer is good for pick up and play. X3 is good for owning your own trade fleet / starfleet and epic battles.

why nobody say Starcraft?

Probably because SC isn't one of the best space strategy games? A good game, yes, but not one of the best.

Because Starcraft is RTS not Strategy. Same general name but different play style.

(I'm being super nitpicky about the word strategy... oh jeez.)

Did... did you just say "Real Time Strategy" isn't "Strategy"?

Same general name but different play style.

Like I said, I'm being super nitpicky about the word strategy.
To me RTS = War/Starcraft, Command & Conquer etc etc...
Strategy = Civilization, Warlock: Master of the Arcane etc etc...

Interesting, I probably would say strategy is the overarching genre, and RTS is a sub-genre

The RTS genre currently refers to games based mostly on tactics, not so much strategy. That are also fast-paced. Technically, games like Knights of Honor and Europa Universalis are Real-Time Strategies, but they're instead referred to as Grand Strategy games due to the modified meaning of RTS. There are even 4X real-time strategy games, like Sins of a Solar Empire, but those don't get called RTS either.

Just say 4X intead of just "Strategy". Both are sub-categories of strategy, but I think the OP means 4X.

You are confused. There is RTS (Real Time Strategy) and TBS (Turn based Strategy)
Both are strategy just different styles of strategy.

Thechnically you are right - but then again: Is StarCraft 2 really a space strategy game? It isn't even "in space", it's just on some other planets. Or is it "in space" since it isn't on Earth? Are there "Spacegames on exoplanets" and "Spacegames in space" and both belong to the term spacegames? If so, is Borderlands a "spacegame"? Or Skyrim, since it is on a different world?
I think that's the same problem as with "Strategy". RTS games like StarCraft mainly depend on tactics and reflexes. Some people claim, that is what's CounterStrike all about.

If I hear "Space Strategy", I wouldn't think of StarCraft.

No neither do I. But it is still a strategy. It would more be a sci-fi strategy.

This! Masters of Orion 1, 2 or 3. I tried Endless Space the other day and it reminded me a lot of MoO. So maybe try out Endless Space sometime, if you cant get a hold of any Masters of Orion.
