not surprised. Private currency is actually a crime, though there have been several in use that were not prosecuted long before computers were around. Legally, Bitcoin is treated as property (or even as a security or commodity), but not as a currency.
There are many reasons for the government to be wary, as crypto currencies can be used for money laundering, investor fraud, smuggling, etc., and, with sufficient adoption, can screw with monetary and economic policy.

Several of my friends deleted their Facebook accounts over time. Not sure why I still have one. I have never really used it much. It's like this voyeuristic platform that allows other people to look into your private life, if you're an idiot enough to put too much info about your day-to-day life up there. I see people putting every little thing about themselves on there. I put nothing. People don't even know who I am dating or whatever. None of their business. XD.

I've had some success contacting companies over Facebook, so there's that. I never post anything nor read what others post, but having another channel for communication when I need it is useful. (Also, Hexus.net competitions provide an extra entry via Facebook. Not that I've ever won anything there.)

Two words - "Shadow profiles"
Even if you're not/ no longer on FB but you've got friends or family there, they can still indirectly collect info about you.

I used in the past a fake name + fake birthday + fake adress + fake phone number + a special (crap) mailadress that was not used for important/private stuff + no pictures from me or friends/family at fb -don't allowed all my friends and family members to post something with me at it too-. And i nearly only used it for a Free Share Group (all stuff that you don't need anymore and someone else maybe want -a win for both people and a win for the nature because it isn't needed to produce that thing again) i made for my city and for Foodsharing. And a few group that connected me with people that have the same illness as i.
But was for sure 2 1/2 or 3 years not more at fb.
I never used Whatsapp, Instagram the same. So what they have about me would be VERY small info pieces and a lot of garbage :-D evil laughing

I just refuse figuring on any picture
As for the random strangers, yeah this you can't avoid (although I think it's extremely rude to take the picture of some random person without asking for permission... and it's actually illegal in my country to distribute such a picture). But it's less of an issue as you have no link to said random strangers, so nobody's going to link the picture to your identity (and if FB never got your picture with your name, they can't ID you - but yeah they can still link all the pictures where you appear...).

Plus, if you have the app on mobile, it already collected that information

But Facebook has been an abandoned wasteland very much like MySpace for years now.
Instagram... that's where the likes (and the fake validation) are.
