I've been playing on PC for nearly 16 years, I'm so used to mouse and keyboard that its like trying to ride a bike backwards when I use a controller.

Not just bad console ports, some genres just tend to work a bit better with a controller. Like SHMUPs & most non-abuse style 2d platformers.

using a controller is really, really easy. and it makes controlling certain games so much better. just buy one, try it out, get used to it, and i promise those 16 years are forgotten after a few days. ^^
i play pc games since 1993 or so, and Amiga games before that. and i always got used to new input methods like joysticks, steering wheels, flight control thingies and gamepads. nowadays i even like to play shooters with a pad (at least in singleplayer).
to be honest, i often get the feeling some pc players don't want to use controllers, because they think the only true input method for pc games is kb+mouse for some strange reason. truth is, we always used other controllers on pc. we had lots and lots of joysticks back in the day. i don't see why we shouldn't use gamepads today. for some games it's just the most convenient way to play.

it is just a case of muscle memory, really (although personally I think it's nigh impossible to play a game like a FPS or anything similar with a moveable camera without either super reliable camera switching in game or a mouse) like gamepads require you to use your thumb a helluva lot more, and the poor bastard's just so used to its only job being to hammer the spacebar that I can't really use joysticks.
although also I think the main reason I like to use keyboard and mouse is that I get distracted VERY easily and I like to tab out of games often (doing it right now, in fact) and when you're using kb+mouse its just easier to simply slam alt-tab and be distracted.

well, i am playing Doom with a controller. you would be surprised how good it works. way better than cover-based shooters. the key here is movement. since you move and aim, you can easily compensate for bad aim with movement, if you know what i mean. it works surprisingly well. and i have no problem hitting my targets. yes, a mouse would still be more accurate. but it's a very viable alternative. and i just love leaning back and playing comfortably. :)
but i guess for someone like you it doesn't really make sense to tell you how good "mouse-games" like shooters work with a controller, right? ^^ but games that are optimized for controllers (many 3rd person games, racing games...) - well, they typically work best with a controller. i can only recommend trying it out. it doesn't take much to get used to it, really.

you don't want to use controllers because you want to be able to alt-tab (which you can of course do without problems and almost as fast, if you use a controller at your desk)? well, that really sounds like an excuse! :P

no, don't do that. xD i have one, and i barely ever use it. the steam controller is mainly good if you want to play in a situation where you can't use mouse+kb (living room, couch). but it's worse than mouse+kb in games that play best with mouse+kb, and it's worse than a controller in games that play best with a controller. so it's a compromise either way. ^^
if you really want to give it a try, i would say go for the XBox controller. the standard (wired) 360 controller is pretty cheap. it's a very solid controller overall (i like it a lot more than the ps3/4 controller, but that's a personal preference). and if money is not a problem, go for the XBox One controller (perhaps with wireless adapter). or even the Elite controller. it's absurdly expensive, but it's also by far the best controller i ever had.
what i definitely would not recommend is any super cheap "compatible" no-name controllers. i had nothing but problems with those (i admit, i didn't buy one of those for a very long time, so this might have changed).

It's not that you can't...but why make your life harder? The game is is hard enough on it's own. It's like playing CS:GO with a steam controller. It can be done...but why would you? :D

I've played DS without a controller... and then got a bit further and died a lot. Wouldn't blame it for a lack of controller. But yeah, check out Bazilus's link for the dsfix thing (although I thought there was a separate one for KBM)
