Unfortunately this is becoming the norm. There are a lot of people out there trying to scam givers.
Remember to report him to Steam, they haven't done anything to the scammers yet but perhaps with enough reports they'll deem it important to act.

He tried to scam me earlier. Please also report him to this website, Steam, http://www.sourceop.com/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=6447, and any other reporting sites. I would also file a claim with steam, and see if you can get your game back. Also it would help if you have any sort of proof with the conversations with some sort of screenshot.

Yeah, it's my own fault I failed to follow your directions. Still sending in a support ticket to Valve, hopefully they'll do something about this jerk.
Not showing winners until they've claimed their gifts is a great idea.

Depending on how clearly you state your case, you can get the giveaway's prize back and their Steam account banned.

dont use steamtrade and dont accept friend requests from winners/faker of your giveaway.

Reading the FAQ is an even better idea. Having something in place to protect people that would make a mistake such as yours is tantamount to encouraging OTHER stupid mistakes. If the scammer was never able to scam you, because your profile was hidden from him/her, then you likely still would have given the game over steam instead of via email. Only it'd have simply been a higher chance at going to the right person.
I've no sympathy for these mistakes. FFS, you're scammed as well as the person who won the giveaway - because you were too busy or some shit to read a simple FAQ. =/

Actually, I did read the FAQ, way back when I first wanted to join steamgifts.com. Unfortunately, by the time I actually managed to get an invite, it was no longer fresh in my mind, so I got caught up in the excitement of people winning my stuff and forgot what the FAQ said.
I was, in fact, in the process of copying the winner's email from the "My Giveaways" page when I was contacted by the scammer.
While I don't expect sympathy for my stupid mistake, that doesn't mean this isn't an issue that needs to be solved.

Not that I can find, though it looks like all his aliases are names of people on steamgifts who've won things- I'm guessing he's been running this scam for awhile now.
Only one I couldn't find was the most recent- "Check your moves"

It's no way to stop this scammers? Seriously, in this forum i saw lots of people scammed by people like this asshole...
A friend was scammed twice few days ago and Steam Support aren't doing anything. It seems the only way is beware with this scammers...

Goddamn it's depressing seeing people out there scamming. I live on a pension and buy Steam games on sale, and love making giveaways here when I can afford it. 2 out of the 3 people involved in this incident got ripped off because there are terrible people out there :<

Agreed. This has me seriously reconsidering whether or not I want to stick to this site- why give away things if some jerk is going to try to steal it from the rightful winner? Why bother entering if someone is just going to scam the giver pretending to be you?
Seriously, some people out there are just scum.

Seriously, WHY WOULD YOU DO THIS?
Stupidity =/= scammed.

While I agree it was really dumb of me, I'm still new to this whole thing, and was swept away in the moment of being able to give something away like this. However, the people really being scammed in situations like this are the ones who actually won the giveaway- yes, I was stupid, but it's not fair to the person who was supposed to win that they got cheated out of their prize.
Luckily, I was saving up money for Deus Ex: HR, and was able to use that to buy another copy to give to the winner. If I hadn't had the money, however, we both would have been screwed by this scammer.

Didn't mean to directly call you stupid. Was making an in general statement, the flow of my post is poor, my apologies.
And major kudos to you for rectifying that.

People get scammed when they're in a new environment, or aren't yet familiar with how something works. I think it's terribly demeaning to say that someone was "stupid." Everyone has their moments of weakness, and I'm pretty sure you could think of some embarrassing moments in your life where you made a silly error. Go on, think of some embarrassing moments you had, and your mortification.

I can think of PLENTY fuck ups in my life, however, I also read the god damn FAQ/Rules on this site and take the Cult's suggestions to heart when gifting because Cult's rules/suggestions are ALWAYS in the best interest of winners.
Do you dive head first into everything you do? Or do you RTFM? I RTFM myself.

No good- he hasn't got a steamgifts account, at least so far as I can find.

Quite possibly- get ahold of the person who started the giveaway, and find out if they were contacted by someone pretending to be you.

So, update time- I contacted Valve, and they eventually told me that I will not be getting the game back, since Steam Trades are final or some crap. They did, however, say that they'll be investigating the scammer and taking appropriate action, and that I would not be contacted with the results of said investigation.
Of course, since I have the link to his steam profile (http://steamcommunity.com/id/Azmeruruel), I can just check for myself- and it looks like he's continuing his shenanigans. He has currently disguised himself as http://www.steamgifts.com/user/nutbread apparently in order to scam this giveaway- http://www.steamgifts.com/giveaway/PybNY/fallout-new-vegas

Jesus.
Does no one read the god damn FAQ/Rules?
That giveaway creator is going to get scammed. His comment for the giveaway is just ridiculous, and he obviously doesn't read.

Welp
A warning to anyone just starting out- ALWAYS send the game through the email shown to you on your account page!
I managed to get scammed by someone who reacted quick, added the winner's picture and name as an alias, then added me on Steam and got me to send it to him as a trade. This individual's page is http://steamcommunity.com/id/Azmeruruel and he goes by the following aliases-
Deathmatch
jddimafx
Downpour
Rikjs
CaptainBonertopia
meruruplay
Arael
seaworth
GoodJobDog
Zet (the winner's name he stole)
I'm gonna buy another copy of the game to send to the winner, because I'd hate to be in his position in this. Still, everyone be careful for scammers like this!
