Bump for freedom!
I spent about a year plus on Lubuntu (which is a variant of Ubuntu that uses LXDE for its desktop, which is lovely, lightweight, and very familiar-looking to Windows users) a while back, it was pretty great. It was frustrating at times, too, but I like to tinker with things and while I had to brave the terminal now and then it wasn't so bad. Not much worse than the troubleshooting I've had to do in Windows over the years, anyway. The worst of it was performing the black magic required to get non-Linux games running in WINE, really. Which is an optional task reserved for people that are gluttons for punishment (I'm exaggerating somewhat; many games run without issue, but the ones that have problems seem to have ALL THE PROBLEMS). I feel like my experience would have been better if Ubuntu wasn't quite so slavish about avoiding proprietary software (some things, like video card drivers, were quite necessary and miserable to install), but there are open alternatives cropping up all the time and they're always improving.
