Someone linked a site that would be giving random keys to uses as a sort of blind box subscription, all of the games would apparently be new to PC. Can't remember the site name or even the topic title to do a search, so I'll just hope someone here remembers it.

Quick google search brought me to SteamCrate

Looking at the Reddit thread it leaves something to be desired though.

Not that one, the site I had in mind was starting up games next year. All previously console exclusive titles. Single game a month, cheaper than that site.

They have a 20$ for 12 games deal right now (the yearly subscription). I'm feeling a bit tempted :>

13 games actually, you get a bonus month free doing that tier. I'll be doing it next week.

They have Steam keys, I'm already in :3

Feels kinda weird though, sending 20$ to Super Villain Incorporated :D

:P

Hopefully it is worth it. At least $20 isn't a huge cash dump, many blind boxes are that or more for a single month.

Yeah, exactly that. I would never go 60$ in blindly, but 20$ seems okay. I imagine I should get enough value back to deem it worth it ^^

I just subscribed.
I decided to bite. I'm very curious to see where this goes and how they'll end up pulling this off.
One new Steam game every month that is released on THAT day AND it's supposed to be kind of like an older title that is getting ported to PC.
I can't imagine how they'd be able to accomplish getting licenses, getting the ports done and then getting a good release on Steam all in one month.
Unless they've already had time to do most of it this year.

I also think they've already done at least half of the work (probably more). I highly doubt porting a game (+ paperwork) would take than a month, so either they're ready with most of the stuff or we'll get a lot of crappy ports :D

On researching, GamePump seems more legit than I expected (SteamCrate seems like 99% pure crap, btw)...

Main guy at GamePump is Robert Bowling, former Call of Duty guy (community manager?), former Humble Bundle VP, and other positions in gaming (Twitter, LinkedIn)

Was listening to this interview from earlier in November of this year, and there's a few salient details, paraphrased here...

  • They are actually doing the work themselves, about 50% legal work and 50% development work
  • The oldest title they've done deals for is from ~30 years ago, and was on the MSX system (released in 1983), and it can be inferred from the interview that it was probably on NES (he talks about not being able to legally emulate NES hardware, but can "get around" that by licensing the MSX library if they had the same game)
  • 3DO and Jaguar are asked about and his response is enthusiastic, and he mentions NES, Sega CD, Sega MegaDrive (but this feels more like a yeah,-this-is-the-kind-of-thing-we're-trying-to-do" rather than any sort of confirmation of any particular systems).
  • The more recent games take longer to do (rights and porting), and even if a game did make it to PC, but wasn't on Steam, they'll look at it. Games from the 360 era are being looked at. (Again, feels like it's just what they want to do, rather than any confirmations.)
  • Online features that don't work anymore is one of the things they need to consider, and it eliminates some titles.
  • It's mentioned that EA/Nintendo are mostly handling their re-releases themselves (so it's unlikely that GamePump will have those titles, imho).
  • He mentions that the Turok re-release was done very well; Nightdive didn't mess with it at all ("still looked terrible", was "still just as fun"). So I'm hoping/thinking they'll follow in the footsteps of that sort of faithful re-release.
  • Mac/Linux/Steam Machine? Right now, they are only guaranteeing Windows PC. Mac/Linux support will be "when we can", on a "case-by-case basis", and it "comes down to demand". So, they'll try... if it's worthwhile.
  • It's been in the works for around nine months, mostly legal legwork and a bit of getting in touch with the old developers.
  • They won't announce the games until it actually drops, first Friday of every month, but you will still be able to buy it afterward at the full price from the site, without the blind preorder discount.

To clarify, the 1983 remark was just about the release date of the MSX, not the particular title. Apologies for the ambiguous wording!

The $20 subscription looks very appealing when compared to the lower tiers, so much that my first urge was to subscribe. But then I remembered many good games I can buy for $20 in a typical Steam sale. I think I'll stay out for now, though with my luck their first re-release will be NOLF ("have never been on modern PC marketplaces" is borderline true in this case).

I imagine if they did that one day, a lot of people would subscribe. :P

It probably won't happen, because the game is stuck in legal limbo. Still it seems some people have decided to make it accessible regardless, e.g. nolfrevival.tk

Too good to be true, sigh. At least we're getting refunds and the 2 free games for those eligible.
