I'd say it makes more sense that if you filtered out games on AG they should be filtered out on the event too.
If it was just wishlist games people could quickly figure out exactly what was in each giveaway via syncing repeatedly, unlike sg filters where it's impossible to filter out the majority of the steam library (since you need to see the game being given away first).

where it's impossible to filter out the majority of the steam library (since you need to see the game being given away first)
Well, ever since ignore-listing got added directly to giveaway pages, you can finda significant majority of content through the site archives. That said, we're talking.. what is it now, 60,000-odd games, packages, and DLCs available through Steam?
Most of us die-hard ignore-listers are still below 30k (and mostly below 20k, I imagine) on our ignore lists, I think, and even that takes a solid bit of effort. Honestly, the room for exploitation is minimal, and it's hard to even consider it exploitation at that point (since really, there are so many more efficient ways to utilize your time :P).
So yeah, I don't see any strong reason why we can't tie it to ignore-list filtering- I mean, it'd be one thing if the only concern was undesired games, but what with SG now allowing previously free and trashware giveaways, and the dominance of trashware on Steam, an event such as this could quickly be compromised. I mean, we can hope it won't, but it's still a foundational concern.
Beyond that, speaking from current experience, it doesn't feel too great to get an ignored game (decent-rated as it may be) right off the bat, either. So I'm not opposed to the filtering from that perspective, either. :S

It only takes one person to write a script to add all gifts with value under $50 to your ignore list (or the reverse to wishlist) and it essentially creates a filter for gems only.
I think it was designed this way to prevent such gamification of the system. Everyone essentially has the same chance of drawing trash or treasure and you can get optimally 40ish draws between now and end to offset bad luck. The flooding with trash issue is of concern, but because everyone can essentially do the same thing there's no real incentive to do so.

SG filters everything down to a cap of 50P, though, so you could get some fun ClickTeam/etc giveaways that way. :P
I can't say that sort of exploitation would have occurred to me, but it does seem like a fair argument against any change.
Maybe SG should just introduce a "trashware" list, and prevent the content of that list and of the **(previously free) list from being uploaded to the event. It'd be more effort site-end, but it seems the best solution user-end.

People have been asking for a script that could auto-set filtered games for years, no ones made one.

+1
Old games and lower priced can be great games.
But the gogo bundle shi* stuff aren't games and far away from great :-D. I can understand that people want to filter that out
I have opened 2 boxes and both have a good Game inside.
I like it that "you already own the gift inside" sort out a good bunch of games.

Not that I really care seeing as I enter so few giveaways now that I haven't won in over a year but I think either black listing gogo etc bundled games from the event or allowing filtering by a wishlist snapshot(ie your wishlist as it as right now) would be the best solutions. Although it may not even turn out to be a problem at all.

I don't think it's worth worrying too much about people exploiting the system. Based on how it's going so far and with the new five-boxes-a-day rate, these gifts look like they're going to get about as many entries as any other public giveaway (possibly more in some cases), so there's no actual incentive for people to spend time trying to cheat the system. Like, the ones I've entered so far all have hundreds of entries already with three weeks remaining.
I'd lean towards highlighting wishlisted boxes and preventing people from opening ones that they have filtered just because it's better for games to go to people who want them. If people openly use this to cheat (ie. talk about it on the forums), they should get in trouble, but otherwise, they're really just cheating themselves (since I suspect most givewaways are going to have 1000+ entries anyway, the real "interesting" part about this isn't winning stuff but the fun of opening the boxes.)

I wonder how many blacklists will be considered for that purpose, in consideration of future such events. :X
It'd definitely be a problem if someone does spam junk content to a significant degree, given that cg clarified that there's no cap to how many boxes we can create. Hopefully we won't see enough of that to matter, but if we do, blacklisting may be the only recourse.
Comment has been collapsed.
I mean, it's not the size of the P that matters, but what it's attached to.
Err.. to rephrase, as long as the game isn't junky or overbundled, there should be some appeal to it.
[Admittedly, finding such a game on Steam these days isn't all that easy, I guess. :P]
That said, there's no direct benefit to creating boxes, so (unlike Chrono's event) there's also no compulsion to offer up subpar content.
Given that, I certainly can't argue with your sentiments on their own. This event doesn't seem as though it'll at all be lacking for submissions, either, so there's certainly no reason to stress over contributing something.
In short, it (to my mind) is fine to just participate as an entrant.^.^

It does seem to be hard to get a good entry count, currently. 🤔
Personally, I feel like it's more enjoyable to open multiple boxes at once, so it'd be appreciable (assuming that he listens to the various requests for a change to the current setup and enacts such) if cg changes the setup to one where that's a possibility. Still, as long as the end result includes us no longer having to keep micromanaging the timer or worrying about entry count, any kind of change should be quite agreeable.
Past that, any increase in entries is going to affect odds of winning, so it's hard to say if such would be of benefit or not (though I can see how immediate gains could feel more stimulating than idly anticipating bigger potential gains later on). 'Course, given that cg stated that he'd be putting up gift cards at points, there's definitely call to want more chances at those.

it might depend on what you call a good count^^
i opened a box with a giveaway with more then 80 entries and i´m sure the box was the reason of it: anime girls on the site will give your box more attention so you will get the entries you want^^

it might depend on what you call a good count^^
Oh, well, any spot within the range of "meeting the CV requirement of 5 entries" and "getting all 8 copies I put up to a good home" would probably be a fair place to apply such a label. ;P For reference, I got 4 entries all at once, and then none after my box got bumped off the front page.
Box cover is a factor, sure, as are things like the game in question and the minimum level requirement.
But the duration that a box is left on the front page for may be the biggest factor of all, and it seems that it'll become even more likely that certain boxes'll get lost during floods as the event goes on. Especially if they're lacking in.. other methods of appeal. :P
Comment has been collapsed.
Definitely. There's now 194 gifts, I've got to open 2 and both were games I have set to filtered/hidden on SG.
Comment has been collapsed.
I mean, it's a really intuitive setup. Just grab some Bad Rats screenshots or artwork, pop them in an editing program, crop to what you want, then clip it and ctrl+v it into imgur's upload section. Alternatively, see if some animated gifs exist, save them and upload them to imgur. The only difficulty in the process should be in lining up the images appealingly across the box's various faces.

welp i made a giveaway for a game on my wishlist, hopefully whoever gets it will enjoy it :,D

Yeah, I'd love if we could select a genre label for the gift box. That seems like a pretty straightforward gain with no downsides.
It's that or the event filtering by ignore list- 'cause so far both my boxes have been generic, hidden-listed platformers (a genre I'm especially picky about, so would have avoided had genre tagging been in place), and either approach would have ensured I wouldn't have opened those boxes. Alas. :P
Comment has been collapsed.
I feel that there should either be a filter by genre (though I don't know how applicable it would be: all tags? main tag? etc.) or possibly a minimum amount of points worth. I get that everyone should be able to contribute to holiday cheer, but seeing as there is a limit to the boxes we can select, I think it is only fair that someone can't just spam a bunch of 5P games, especially with the number of boxes already made.

Really wish I'd seen this message a few minutes ago!
No offence, but I'm pretty sure that's the most disappointed I've ever been after opening a present...

I've said this on the announcement thread already, but let me say it here again: the strict 12hour cooldown is a big turnoff. Correct me if I'm wrong, but after opening a box you have to wait 12 hours before you can open another, if you wait let's say 30 hours, you can still open only one box, and have to wait another 12 hours, right?
If someone has bad timing, due to work or sleep cycles they might miss out more than just one box like that. In the end, it might give inspire some folks to use a script in order to maximize their chances. That's defnitely not what we want.
I would suggest that the tries to open a box are added up instead. E.g. if someone is away for several days they may open several boxes afterwards (one for every 12 hours they were away). And if they choose to open all their boxes on Christmas Eve, so what? Also, the timer should probably reduced with the amount of boxes. Every 12 hours is 44 boxes for the duration of the event, which is not even one quarter of total boxes right now (with about 200 boxes currently). I understand it's not intended that everyone can peek into every box, but there should be a fair chance to see enough of them to find a giveaway that's worth joining.

Rather, I don't see any good reason for deciding against allowing entry storing. Daily login events are fine for online games where they're trying to habituate you to a pattern of logging in, but the "understandable awkwardness" of such an arranagement loses its "understandable" element within this kind of context.
I mean, allowing for stockpiling the full number of boxes might be a bit too much, since you do want to foster some sort of event involvement [perhaps encouraging users to create gifts of their own by way of that] but having a time window that's short enough to compromise basic real life considerations is a fair bit less easily explained. Especially since it seems like you have to actually be on to open a box to start the timer for the 12 hour timer each time..?
Allowing us a 2 to 3 day window would cover all but the most intense real life considerations, allowing us a reasonable window to deal with work issues, health upsets, travel times, and so forth. At the very least a limit of 24 hours should be applied, as considerations which lock us out of a single day are fairly common occurances for some number of us.
Comment has been collapsed.
5 per day is much better. Still I'd appreciate if we could save them up, it's holiday season after all. People might be away a few days. What's the harm, for example, if someone wants to open their boxes all at once on the last day? Should be their choice, it's not like they'd have any advantage. Anyway, 5 entries per day it is, I can live with that.

There doesn't seem to be any good reason to be that strict with things, from either the perspective of creators or entrants.
I don't have much consideration toward the entrant angle of things (I mean, it seems small in the overall context, but it's still more than a typical advent calendar, so..), but I'd definitely prefer a better display for and easier entry into gifts as a creator [it's kinda problematic that gifts seem to be entirely ignored after their first hour of posting].
Likewise, it's intuitive that available entries would scale to the number of gifts, though that's something that's tricky to arrange properly. It'd be nice if cg could work something out for it, but there are more fundamental issues [ie, the display layout and the strict timer] for him to address before anything else.

Each box should include a random chance of resetting your timer completely (legendary) or reducing it by some hours (rare to common).
I'm actually somewhat tempted to make a gift box with a description of the game as its wrapper (Unbundled! 85 on Metacritic!).

I.. can't at all see the appeal of that sort of concept. o.O;

 Yeah, I used part of a backdrop from my game as the box art, but that was a more subtle approach. Turning your box into a puzzle is a pretty spiffy idea in its own right., and could be a lot of fun for those who take note of it. Seems like an idea that should be encouraged [though I also wanna see more pretty box art, so maybe layer your hints on top of something nice ~.^].

I agree with a lot of the suggestions and complaints on here but I want to try and keep things positive. So thank you to everyone who put out a good game, regardless of price or bundled status or genre. You guys are the ones making this event fun and taking the sting out of it when we do end up wasting turns opening boxes created by the not so nice people around here.

Gags aside, yeah, that's the aim of the thread. The event has some quirks, but it's probably the single most interesting thing I've seen on SG in my time here. Here's hoping it ends with a lot of "Woo, I won something awesome!" comments in this thread. ^.^

I'm just happy to find something that's recognizable as a game :P. Though honestly it makes finding the gems that much more exciting :D. I hope they run this event again some time!

(In fact, my fifth box just gave me something wishlisted. ^.^)
And yeah, this could be a cool yearly event. Bi-yearly, even, but I'm not sure how they'd go about theming a summer event.
Pity that Easter is so soon after Christmas, since it matches the concept rather well as well.

Yeah, that was a nice change. And I'm glad your luck turned around :D

Some boxes are the digital version of getting socks on christmas eve. One might be frustrated rigth after opening, but you realize that it might be useful later, so it's ok.
The only thing I hate are trolls that put images from a AAA game on the box and a asset-flip game inside just to make people waste one of their 5 daily chances. That is not only mean, but greedy as hell.

+1
Just blacklisted a level 10 user for doing this repeatedly (been a long time since I last used that feature...). I can understand doing it maybe once, but after that it's just being mean. So many wasted chances :(

Another possible suggestion is if people that we have whitelisted and/or whitelisted us have some sort of mark on their boxes. Haven't thought about this one too much, but it just came to mind.

The 12 hour timer was, but the switch to 5 boxes / 24 hours seems as though it may have standardized the reset point; At the time of the change, there was still 5 hours left on the 24, which is one indication that it would have been impossible to proc a third activation. Second indication for that, I opened one of the very first boxes of the event and myself was only midway through the second timer when the switch occurred.
And, of course, both of those considerations can be tossed out the window in favor of the third, which is that the switch automatically updated its count so that it reduced based off preexistant entries. Meaning even if you had snuck in a third entry prior to the switch, you would still have only been left with two additional ones after the switch. Which circles us back to the first point, which is that the 24 hour timer hasn't yet reset (and even if it had, that'd bring someone up to 10 entries, not 6).
In short, 6 entries should theoretically be impossible outside of a glitch, exploit, or alt account.

In short, 6 entries should theoretically be impossible outside of a glitch, exploit, or alt account - or another cause, my fuckup, turns out I counted one box twice while writing this post, probably because of new boxes getting added it switching page ;) Everything is fine, I opened 5 boxes, 2 are still jackpots, one is OK, 2 are misses :)

Opened a giftbox for a game I've made a giveaway for because I didn't really want it. RIP.
Oh, by the way. It'd be nice to have a way to at least filter the boxes you've opened so far. Either removing them from the options to open, or allowing you to see only those that you have opened so far.
Though that might be seen as unnecessary as I assume this is a one time event.

while you cannot filter them they are easilly recognizeable from ones you haven't open (they are marked as green, same as boxes you created).
What would be nice thou is another marking (red preferrably) for boxes you cannot enter - because you own game or are blacklisted. Most of boxes I tried to open ended up being like that ;p

Yeah, though I assume by the end of the event there will be quite a few pages.
We're already to around 5 I think, and it's only day two or three.
Yeah, that too.

If they're packages which contain DLCs, SG also wouldn't be able to detect ownership, and the same is true for games Steam is "still learning about". There's unfortunately not much that SG can do about what Steam decides they will and will not send information out on. :/

I wish it wouldn't show games that I already own, opened two boxes today of games that I already have, Serous Sam 2 HD and Resident Evil 5.

So far I've seen people be annoyed by the fact that you can't filter out boxes for games you've chosen to ignore. While I understand and kinda relate to that complaint, it would take away from the creativity of the event. If the site automatically filtered out boxes of games that I've ignored then I wonder if I would even see a single box (including my own :p) and I'm not really expecting to find even a single game giveaway I'd be entering. I'm just trying to take this as opportunity to admire some creative boxes and seeing if some of them are what I think they might be or if the art is deliberately a red herring.

So how about a compromise? Currently, already-opened boxes are indicated with a different background. If ignored games were also indicated in this way, it'd let people see all the fun boxes, and still let them open boxes for filtered games if they choose to.

Now that would actually be pretty cool. Best of both worlds.

For questions about the event or discussion about technical details, please use the official event thread instead.
Note: Spoilers related to gift boxes are against event rules. Please refrain from any comments that could be used to identify the contents of any gift box.
(cg has confirmed that there is no inherent way of associating a gift box with its creator.)
I personally thought there might be some interest in a thread for hyping what giveaways we've put up and (eventually) what we've won, for discussing holiday gift box designs, or just for friendly holiday banter in general.
Well, uh.. have at it, if you want to, maybe, I guess?
Here's a little something to keep your attention. ^.^Comment has been collapsed.
