Hi,

I hope I'm not asking the obvious but I was curious about how the system determines whether or not a giveaway is a re-gift.

As a future reference I would like to know that because hypothetically I may like to contribute with a different copy of the same game that I previously won and added to my games list. (e.g. I get portal 2, like it so much that I like to get more co-op buddies so I buy 4 copies while there is a discount and contribute them back to the community)

More accurately, is the criteria simple as checking if the same user recently won the game they are contributing or is it more complex and it take into account if the game is added to the library or not.

thanks!

I think the OP is asking if he may give away a copy of a game he won here after he won and redeemed it (so a different copy of the same game).

Why isn't there an automated process? Is it on the to-do list?

yeah when you think about it, there are too many fundamental changes you have to make both on steam and steamgifts to make it work without too many back flips. not impossible but probably not worth it :)

A user wins a giveaway and receives the game. The moment that person marks the gift as received, the Steamgifts site forces the user to resync their account. If that won game does not show up in their Steam library after the sync, a ticket is automatically generated for the mods/support staff/whomever.

Yeah, that doesn't technically detect regifters, but it detects people who don't activate a won game before they can even get around to regifting it.

A) Up until a few weeks ago I always kept my profile private. Whenever the site forced me to resync I simply switched to public. Everyone else who has their profile set to private does the same thing.

B) I did not know that. However, if it is known which items won't display then couldn't any automatic system simply include exceptions for them? Might be a bit of a hassle, but if there's already a list for bundle games then it wouldn't be impossible to maintain a second list.

Also, there would be the issue of people that mark received before actually activating the game. Sometimes (especially if I am familiar with the user) I will mark as received as soon as I get an email with a game key or bundle url, even if I am away from home and thus cannot activate it immediately. I like to give people their contrib value as soon as possible.

Also this same situation presents itself when people trade me games that I won. As soon as its in my inventory I mark it as received. It could be a few minutes or a few hours (if I am in the middle of a game when the trade request comes in) before I activate the game.

Marking a gift as received before receiving and activating it isn't something that should be done anyhow.

AFAIK, there is no automated process.

Users simply report other users for regifting - mods will then take a look at the issue and act accordingly.

If you redeemed the game, you can sleep calmly and make giveaways of it :) There is no bot checking your account while you making giveaway, only suspicious users, who wont report you, if you have the game in library :3

Actually, some users will still report you if they see you're giving away a game you've previously won without even checking your library. Fortunately, the mods are smart enough to chek if you have the game on your acccount before suspending you.

Adding a comment on your giveaway much like the thread text above would suffice to keep people off your back.

People occasionally check the winners/gifters to see if they have both a win and a giveaway for the same game. If they do, and don't have the game int heir steam library *which means they're most probably now giving out the same copy of the game they won), they get reported. Nothing automated behind that, just users that like to keep the community in check.

If you activate the game you have won, then it's not re-gifting. You are just contributing with another copy of the same game, because you liked it and want others to enjoy it. Re-gifting is if you win a game, then don't activate it but use is to create a giveaway.

I open a support ticket for every giveaway which i entered and didn't win. If rerolling doesn't pick me as a winner i open the ticket again. Rinse and repeat
