"I bought something from Dota 2's own site with my Steam account and I played for 2 hours.Never got any cards.I got that Witch Doctor set with my purchase and I still can't get any cards."

Don't think it works like that sadly...it's pretty much a pre-purchase system, rewarding those who purchased something beforehand while those who pay for stuff after have to pay more to get those same rewards.

Purchase had to be made prior to entering the trading card beta, as stated in the official FAQ.

buy a random item from shop => "premium", but nothing special about it yet except card drops

"Free to play games drop game cards based on your in-game purchasing history. If you've made purchases in-game prior to the Steam Trading Card Beta, or if you purchased TF2 prior to the Free to Play Update, you'll have 4 or 5 drops available for these games. You'll receive more card drops when you buy items in game, approximately one card drop for every $9 USD spent."

You will only be able to earn DOTA2 cards if you had bought something from the DOTA store prior to the Beta.
If you go to your Badges page, you will see the list of games/cards to collect. If DOTA2 isn't on that page you won't be able to earn cards at this time.
FYI: Spectating/Watching DOTA games counts as game time and will earn you cards. You don't need to play if you don't like DOTA. Note: Idling in the lobby may not earn cards; I suggest spectating as I earned 4 cards from doing it.

+1
As for the idling: lobby should do it, it works even in HL2. I was just idling on the main screen in HL2 and got my cards.

I've just idled at the main menu and earned all cards for every game except Don't Starve (just too awesome not to play for hours!) and Dota 2 (apparently Valve doesn't think I deserve cards... -_- )

My DOTA 2 says it's Premium, although I don't remember ever buying anything for it. (Clicky on this doohickey, Ricky...)
Does this mean it will cough up some cards? I tried it for an hour yesterday, without any luck.

Don't think it has anything to do with premium. Also have this premium DLC, but I haven't made any purchases for sure.

So I could play DOTA2 until it turned me into a bilious misanthropist, and it wouldn't yield a single trading card to temper my newfound hatred of my fellow man?

Oh wow, I can't believe how wrong all of you have it? I can't even help you guys you are so far off.
That's not how you get dota 2 cards.
look I have cards. its has nothing to do with the store.
Valve would love to read this. All of you buying dota 2 items thinking it will get you cards, when it won't.

I'll buy any of your dota2 trading cards for a ref each :)

Sigh.
You don't pay anything = You get 4-5 cards.
For every ~$9 you spend in the store, you get a CARD DROP.
Read the FAQ.

The FAQ actually states that, in order to receive cards for TF2 and Dota2, you must have bought something.
Free to play games drop game cards based on your in-game purchasing history. If you've made purchases in-game prior to the Steam Trading Card Beta, or if you purchased TF2 prior to the Free to Play Update, you'll have 4 or 5 drops available for these games.

Still no clear answer. So you need to pay 9$ for a card drop in dota2 but not in tf2? Or is it you get your 4-5 drops if you have premium in tf2 and dota2 and then 1 drop for every 9$ spent?
I got cards from tf2 but can't get it in dota2.
FAQ says the same about tf2 and dota2, but it's not. In other words it's enough to spend 50 cents or so in tf2 to get the cards and you need to spend 9$ for 1 card in dota2?

If my DOTA 2 isn't premium, I won't get those cards from it, right? So if I bought something from the market, would it count as an upgrade to premium?
