Recently my laptop had a bit of a breakdown and I had to do a System Restore right to the first day I got it.

I wanted to save a couple of things, including my Steam Save files. I researched how to do so and I was told that save files for most games are in the C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\userdata folder. I copied the whole userdata folder onto a memory stick and restored my laptop, hoping this would work.

After recently re-installing Batman: Arkham Asylum GOTY Edition, starting the game up and re-installing GFWL. I noticed that I have no saves. Why is it not there?

My save files for Trine, Binding of Isaac, Plants vs Zombies and BIT TRIP RUNNER are all still there but Batman is not.

I am using the same profile on GFWL, the same Steam account and my OS is Windows 7 Premium Home Edition or something like that.

Please help, I was nearly at 100% completed and I absolutely love this game. If I have also lost my Arkham City save I will be very annoyed, as Steam already wiped my Arkham City data once before.

Something tells me GFWL are to blame

GFWL aka the save game eraser, as quoted from someone I won't list who.

Yep you can blame GFWL, with all games that use GFWL is same problem, users forgot to backup GFWL. So even if you save your game save you need to backup and save your GFWL profile, otherwise your saves are lost.

GFWL is hungry for your save games.

The bad news is that the saved game was most likely in your C:/Users/[yourname]/Saved Games folder, or some other folder under your Windows user ID. Even if you had backed up your saves, these would be encrypted and in all likelihood inaccessible upon reinstallation of the game.

I remember having to use a 3rd party GFWL save game decryption tool to get my GTA:SA (I think) saved games back. GFWL is a rung below Ubisoft when it comes to barmy copy protection to "protect" the game-buying public...

Why the hell would you want your saved games encrypted by default or, worse still, erased randomly? WHY?????

Arkham Asylum save files are contained in Users/Username/Documents/Square Enix/Batman Arkham Asylum GOTY/SaveData. Since the game doesn't support cloud saves, this folder must be backed up separately.

Some people also advise to have GFWL folder (AppData/Local/Microsoft/Xlive) backed up too since they have some weird encryption stuff and it may be messing with save files too. But I guess it's not that vital for AA.
