Well you can now convert it to a steam copy according to today's patch notes.

Steamworks multiplayer is coming in a future update.
Changes:

  • Removed SecuRom from the title and all DLC
  • Added a “Granting Tool” In the steam “Tools” section that turns a retail disc into a Steam version of Borderlands
  • “News Ticker” added to the main menu to give you updates on the Multiplayer restoration updates.
  • Imported SecuRom DLC keys into Steam, so if you bought DLC outside of Steam, activate it within Steam and get your matching content.

Sorry if this was already posted, didn't see it anywhere though.

Yay, another game to add to my Steam collection ;)
Too bad you have to jump through that activation tool though, otherwise it'd have been a lot easier to pass on my extra copies :/

To clarify:
The first game doesn't even have CD keys, it relies on SecuROM's evil black magic. Activation tool does the SecuROM check and applies steam key directly to your account - you don't get a key that you can give away in between.

I don't think there's serial number, so it checks that you have legit copy by checking the disc. (Edit: Only DLC have CD keys)

it uses the disc to port BL1 to steam but that is the base game only

if you have the GOTY like i did then you use the key to active the DLC

so in theroy you could give away the code for just the DLC and it will activate it told me when i entered the dlc will unlock as soon as BL1 has been installed so maybe you could give the DLC key to someone who has base game and they could have DLC though that is relying on you not wanting it lol

FINALLY! Thanks for sharing the info! I was going to buy the Borderlands GOTY, because I had a retail copy, which had a freakin SecuROM, and it was easily piratable. Finally I can get BL 1 GOTY on my Steam acc! THANKS!

I concur. I just finished BL2 (no DLC) and I was thinking of going back for a few quick rounds of BL1 anyway. Not to mention, I saw the announcement the minute it went live, so it definitely looks like a sign. :)

official announcement

btw, if anyone else wonders where the "Tools" section is:
In your client, on top of your game list there's a menu next to the game filter. By default it reads "ALL GAMES". If you click it you'll find a menu option "Tools".

I have a retail copy, but only one CD key inside ; will this activate game + DLCs or DLCs only ?

The base game does not have a key, so your key is for one or more DLC.

From what I've read you use the tool to activate your base game on Steam, afterwards you can activate your key.

Quote from Georbox forum:
"In order to convert your retail copy of Borderlands to the Steam version, please follow the steps outlined below:

You’ll need to find your game disc and you’ll need to create a free Steam account. http://store.steampowered.com/about/
Navigate to your game “Library” menu, then select “TOOLS,” and locate the Borderlands Granting Tool. Install this tool.
Installing and running the Borderlands Granting Tool will guide you through the process of getting you a Steam version of Borderlands. NOTE – You will need your Original Game Disc to prove ownership.
After the tool completes, you will be able to install Borderlands from your Steam Library.
What about my DLC or Game of the Year version?

If you purchased any DLC through either the official Gearbox or 2K Stores, or purchased a Borderlands PC Game of the Year Edition outside of Steam, you will need to find your original activation key and redeem it within Steam AFTER unlocking Borderlands on your Steam account. For instructions on how to do that, please refer to the Steam directions on activating a key:

https://support.steampowered.com/kb_...5414-TFBN-1352

If you have lost your officially purchased DLC Key, you’ll need to visit the Gearbox Support site and follow the steps for recovering a lost key.

https://store.gearboxsoftware.com/support/

If you are unable to recover your Game of the Year (GOTY) code voucher, please submit a support request. "

Good news. Now I may go back to BL1 without worrying about Securom or Gamespy. Although BL2 is keeping me busy still.

Now i'm more pissed that i lost this little note with the DLC-Codes inside but whatevs, basegame is great enough on its own.

What about a downloadable non-Steam copy?

I tried to download the old SecuRom version I had on Get Games, but the downloader failed. I contacted them and they gave me a Borderlands GOTY Steam key.

Wouldn't have done it without this topic.

and of course people are exploiting this on other sites by mounting pirated copies and using the tool to convert it... this is why publishers don't even bother with stuff like this.

Yup that's what I wanted to say. I had a Borderlands GOTY copy, so if people can exploit a torrent file, I guess I could exploit the physical copy, by giving it to my friends (no offence, just thinking). I'd hate those people, if Gearbox would retreat from moving Borderlands into Steamworks. I hope exploiters will get their punishment, or at least they get their game revoked. Anyway they can exploit the base game, but not the DLC-s. In my country, the GOTY price ( which was non-Steam until now ) costs 2000 HUF, which is less than 9$! I bought it, when BL 2 GOTY came out, so it was a good deal IMO.

I remember when it was gamespy anyone could simply make a gamespy account and play online, no authentication. So even people with pirate copies could play with people that had legit copies. It was a weird decision (or mistake?) but it benefitted the games population and popularity.

Figured as much, and wondered why they'd use this method. I guess they presume people who want to steal it already have been for years.
