Bump! Dying Hdd are always a pain, but at least you have time to back up your data so that's something.

Sincere condolences for your loss :(
Laptop hard drives are a major hassle, because they're more frequently subjected to shocks than desktop drives.
Avoid Seagate like the plague, this is one of the cases where "who spends more, spends less".
And Western Digital isn't much better, better stick to Hitachi (which is a WD subsidiary, by the way).
Also, your train is not crappy at all.

Seagate has the highest failure rates, Western Digital has its fair share of problematic products (although most are fine), while Hitachi is simply the most reliable brand. I don't know too much about Toshiba.
So, if a SSD is out of the question, Hitachi is the best choice.
Also, HDDs don't like high temperatures, so keep that in mind.

RIP to your HDD. If it's within your budget, maybe look into an SSD to replace (for that super speed boot up, etc!). If you must go with a rotating drive, I recommend Hitachi as I've had great experiences with them and if cost is more of an issue, WD tends to have a really good warranty and warranty process.
PS, your train is awesome, however I don't qualify yet :(, maybe next time! haha

Another option is you could get a lower capacity SSD for your OS and mobile essential programs, and use an external high capacity HDD (they're getting super cheap, something along the lines of 2TB external 7200rpm for ~$120ish) for non-essential programs. I used to run a setup like this when I was saving for a desktop, but it's my go to suggestion for those that only have a laptop for gaming, etc.
Oh, also, forgot to mention you can turn your current HDD to a temporary external drive until it fully dies as a stopgap for the external (gotta get your money's worth outta that clunker...jeez I sound like a super cheap bastard hahaha)

I actually did that with my older computer. Still using as external. This laptop came with a small SSD, but was set up for caching and I think recovery. Didn't want to deal with it, and knew less at the time. I dunno if I'll change anything at the present time. Maybe next one? haha

So after a few days of endless toiling, and a night without sleep, finally my system is up and running.
A few failed attempted at reinstalling windows (each took more than 3hrs to set up the drive and fail), and four taking apart my computer sessions, I'm back and running, and almost in time to finish the giveaways.

Yay! My HDD is dying slowly. Bad sectors appearing and all that. Luckily it still works so I'm in the process of backing up data, and waiting for new hdd and USB flashdrive to setup Windows install drive.
To commemorate, decided to make my first train, albeit a crappy one. LV3+
Let's hope the swap and reinstall works.
