I basically agree with the OP. But I don't think any fixed percentage will fix the currently flawed system. Take a look at Nintendos idea on the first page at the bottom. He suggested to ditch the whole point system and implement tickets. Most if not all of the OPs problems would be solved this way imo.
Edit: Is it really 5% now? I got so many points in the last ~2 hours. Feels more like 20% or something like that. I think I will watch my point growth carefully in the next hours. That doesn't feel right.

When the point system was first implemented, 10% was fine for a while, but then more and more people registered, and more giveaways were made, and so were the points generated. Same deal now with 5%, it was perfect at first.
I remember reading a suggestion about making points generated depending on the number of giveaways or some wizardry like that (I'm no good at this calculation stuff), which would be a good idea if it could be implemented, so we dont have to lower/rise the point generation every time there is a change in the community numbers

NO. CLOSE INVITES AND IT'S PERFECT.
EDIT: and delete the scammers.... facepalm

I'm reasonably certain if you weren't on this site yet you wouldn't be voting to close invites.

I mean since he's already registered on the site it's very easy to say, hey let's just not allow anyone else in!
Boosts my odds of winning!
If he hadn't received an invite however he'd likely be furious at the suggestion we not allow anyone else in.

In all honesty the site would probably be better off had the invites never been opened.

It's not his fault people don't read the eligibility rules on his giveaways that require them to have the game on their wishlist.
And while his games may only be Humble Bundles it's still far more then you, and he regularly offers opinions on how to improve the site in the forums.
He's contributing to the site several times more then you are so it seems a tad arrogant for you to demand he give more games away.

kijib, why do you have only 38% in " gifts received by users" in your profile?
Comment has been collapsed.
He requires the winner to have the gifted game be on their wishlist prior to a certain date to ensure it goes to someone who really wants it. I don't agree with such requirements but they are allowed.
Since 80% of people don't read, they enter anyway.
You see this all the time, a giveaway has specific rules for eligibility and the vast majority never read them and enter ignorant of their ineligibility.

He actually had one code for Humble Bundles but he made giveaways for Aquaria, Machinarium etc....

I'm in favour of dropping the point generation again. I'm entered in 14 ongoing giveaways right now, and have 300pts.
Points are coming fast enough that I don't even look at them, I've been at 300pts pretty much permanently for the past week despite entering more giveaways then I ever have.
It worked well when it was first dropped to 5%, but the number of users has increased dramatically since then and the gifts created have gone up substantially. While that's a great thing, and speaks well of peoples generosity it also pushes us back to points being increasingly irrelevant.

I think we should experiment with 2.5% and see how it goes and if suddenly only the people who actually saved up (rather than just get tons of points regardless of what giveaways they entered) can enter for skyrim then we will se like a 1/500 chance per giveaway and then maybe reduce it even lower so its 1/100 chance for the best games you actually want

Why would you further restrict people's freedom to enter free giveaways? There are no other ads or anything on this site, so why would you say, essentially, "THIS SITE IS ONLY FOR THE GAMES YOU ABSOLUTELY NEED"? In my opinion, there should be more private giveaways, but the point gen system should stay the same, or even be increased to 10% again.

When was the last time you made a giveaway on this site?

I just had another thought as to why we should not lower the amount of points. Lately I have seen giveaways being experimented with game creators. They are trying to advertise for their game by giving it away on here. The more entries they get the more likely they will give away a game. By leaving the points where they are and not decreasing them we might see more giveaways in the future.

I disagree, The giveaway I saw specifically said that you could only win if you joined a steam group. IT also said "I will be more likely to give away more games on steamgifts if the numbers of the steam groups grows." If people don't have enough points they sure as hell not going to click on the giveaway and read about steam groups. Also Think about it. Its only worth the advertisement if your are able to advertise to lots of people. (we are talking 1000+ at least). If they see 1000+ entries its gonna be a hell of a lot easier to talk them into doing a give away. This is business and they wanna see numbers. They not gonna give away free games in good faith that people will spread the word.

Man, I remember when this site had 5,000 members. Now look at it- 24,000. This site's growning man! I can hardly maintain 50 points on average per day because I enter so many giveaways, but with the new influx of members I agree the point percentage should be less. Not 2.5%, but maybe 3.5% or 4%?

Do you have to complain about this stuff every week? This site has a shitload of members now. Nothing will increase any odds of winning anything.

Given the thread now has 111 comments my guess is the answer is yes, people do care.

About a week ago I had about the same amount of entries as you did and I've been on the site a similar length of time.
I now have about 60 more entries.
I have 300pts.
This could be construed as an indication that points have ceased to hold any relevancy.
Comment has been collapsed.
It effectively kills any chances of the point system being able to accomplish what it had been put in place to do.
Limit the number of giveaways one can enter.
If one never has to worry about points then it's meaningless.
Comment has been collapsed.
I currently only have 27 points and am only entered in 2 giveaways, one for 10 points and another for 1 point.

I think we should be able to search for the games we want, then. :O

You've entered over 20 giveaways a day since you registered according to your profile. That should be ample evidence a change is needed.
Comment has been collapsed.
that's a lot considering you don't have to do anything to get points and this site is FREE...I just want to make it so people have the best chance to win the games they really want and prevent people who win games they don't even want due to having so many points and barely even play them
Comment has been collapsed.
Explain to me how only being able to enter 2-3 giveaways a day increases your chance of winning. With almost 25,000 people registered you can bet your ass you will almost always be competing against around 200 people or more per giveaway, even if the points are severely decreased. You keep saying it will increase odds of winning. "BUT YOU HAVE A BETTER CHANCE OF WINNING A GAME YOU ACTUALLY WANT!" Even if this is true the difference is incredibly negligible. And who are you to gauge how much a person wants a game? "Oh they aren't playing it enough..." Boo fucking hoo. Now we have to play games at YOUR leisure to satisfy you? I won a copy of HL2 EP 1. I have not played it yet. Does that mean I don't want it? Bullshit. I will play the fuck out of that game when I get around to it. So will most of the people on this site who win any game.
Comment has been collapsed.
Nobody is objecting to that. But what you don't seem to understand is that rather than entering 5 giveaways for a game with 1000 people in them. You will be entering 2 giveaways with 500 people in them. Your odds basically stay the same. There is no magic way of increasing the odds of winning for everybody. In fact, the only thing limiting entries WOULD do is help people who monitor the site 24/7 while shafting people who don't.

Technically you can only enter about 5% of all the games that are posted since you only get 5% of the points. It is actually a bit more since points round up, but even only being able to enter 10% of all the giveaways posted isn't very much. There are a SHITLOAD of members and giveaways now. Being able to enter 5%-10% of all the giveaways really is not bad. Expecting the amount of giveaways you can enter to remain the same as more giveaways are created and more members join is incredibly short sighted.

Do you need to open this kind of topic every freakin' month?
You didn't do anything to contribute the site, all you do is complain, you've made some false giveaways (labeling Aquaria and Machinarium as separate games, rather than humble bundles - which they actually were) and you've cheated some winners for their games.
But still, you're the first one to talk.

And despite all this he feels more entitled to certain games because, "He wants them more."

iam so sick of this...evorbody that is bitching about that we have to many points is the ones that alredy have alot of games in there steam and don't care about like portal 1...they are only after the big games..but like me i allways need more points becous i want a game like portal 1 so iam entryring like everone that i see..and if i get less point it don't make me a winner
Comment has been collapsed.
I will admit that if you don't have orange box you need more points since most of the giveaways are HL2 extras and portal from the arg or portal 2 pre order, hmmmm maybe if we reduce the points generation we can artificially reduce the entry cost for those games since they are so common

Yes I know.
I know, I know.
At the risk of being completely shunned by the community I have one last points system rant left in me.
I think we should lower the points generation of the site (again)
Reasons:
1. People don't say thank you enough/at all
Many people think this is a big problem that people don't say thank you when they enter a giveaway.
I think it really isn't that big of a problem.
WHY?
Because you can't expect people of being thankful when it's so easy to enter a giveaway. Entering giveaways is not a big deal because we have too many points. MAKE ENTERING GIVEAWAYS A BIG DEAL by decreasing the points generation.
2. People don't read the description of the giveaways to see what the gifter has to say about the game/if the giveaway is fake/ if the gifter has something they want people to know about the game
Best way to fix this problem? Have less points so people are actually wary of fake giveaways. Right now there is a giveaway for 2 copies of Modern Warfare 3 and a giveaway for 2 copies of Skyrim.
Seeing as how there are so many entries for these (myself included) people obviously don't care whether or not the giveaways are fake because they have more than enough points to enter.
3. The Site Will Just Keep Growing
We are close to 25,000 members. The more members we have the more entries per giveaway, the more entries per giveaway = less chances of winning = chances of winning a giveaway is equated to winning the steam top 10 wishlist drawing (exagerration). Entering giveaways should be harder than it is now.
4. Change the site from people thinking they can enter every game that they are sort of interested in to games people really want
Let us not forget why we are here (excluding the super generous minority). We want to win giveaways!
And we have tons of points so why not?
I enter for games that look sort of interesting, you enter for games that look sort of interesting. I try to restrain myself, with less than 250 entries being here since the site launched, but there are tons of people who enter for every giveaway they can as long as they have the spare points.
It's not right that the person who REALLY wants to win Killing Floor never wins one because someone else who thinks it looks neat and plays it for 1 hour and is done with it decided to enter.
5. Big Games are too easy to enter for
At this point of the site, it really isn't that hard to save up 50-60p. Every day we get tons of points, be inactive for 1-2 days and you can enter for Skyrim. We need to make people more conservative. People should have 100p at all times in case someone makes a Skyrim giveaway.
It's hard to explain but you should feel pressured to NOT enter games you only sort of want in FEAR that a giveaway you do want is made.
We need to be thinking that points won't come back as fast as they do now, so you better save up and NOT enter for
Petz Horsez 2
Entering giveaways should be a big deal
Every single point has to be a big deal, we have to go from
"OH man, I need 5 more points to enter for Killing Floor which looks cool" to "OH man, I need 5 more points to enter for Killing Floor which I must REALLY want because 5 points is a big deal, what if someone makes a Skyrim giveaway and I can't enter that?"
Why does the person who registered last week have 300 giveawya entries?
Too many points.
I propose cutting the points generation in half from 5% to 2.5%
