Is it disrespectful to the GA creator to leave a negative review of a won game?
You're not dragging or calling out the GA creator in this writeup, right? Cos I don't see any issue with a negative review in that case. If you're being honest about what you disliked and why you don't recc it to anyone, then there isn't any impropriety and again, you're just being honest. The GA creator didn't create the game, after all, the devs and the publishing company did :/

+1
Honestly I just want people to try most of thire wins...the "just idle it for cards to buy more trash" meme is real. Other than a few GA's I've made that I've really cared about the rest have just been "I hope someone plays it a bit" and I've been happy enough with that.

The appreciation you have for the giveaway creator and the appreciation you have for the game are two different things. If someone who received one of my games said they ended up not liking it, I wouldn't feel bad for it, since they wouldn't know they'd like the product until they tried it (or spoiled their own experience online). So the GA and the feedback you leave on the steam page are two distinct topics.

You don't need to say that you got the game for free, that is only needed if the developer gave you the game.

That box is there to indicate that the reviewer received the game for free from the developer/publisher for the purpose of writing the review because it is legally required to disclose that in some countries, so Steam added that check box to make it easier.
You told him "doesn't matter if you won the game or paid for it. Just indicate in your review that you got the game for free". So you are saying that if you won the game you should indicate in the review that you got it for free, that is false. If his opinion has nothing to do with the price he paid for the game, then there is no reason to mention it. If for some reason his opinion of the game has to do with the price he paid for it, then he can add that if he feels like it, but he did not mention in the OP here that his opinion has anything to do with what he paid for the game, so I don't see any reason to tell him to include that info.

Of course not. I'm not even going to go into details why, as there are too many reasons.

I think the fact that you put 20 hours into a game you don't even like makes you one of the most appreciative winners here. If the GA creator feels strongly about the game they might be a bit sad you didn't enjoy it, but that has nothing to do with any lack of disrespect. Besides, many people give away games they wouldn't enjoy themselves, so these persons probably wouldn't care at all and just be happy that you tried playing it.
By the way: as a Steam user I'm always glad to find constructive and well-written negative reviews of games that are rated overwhelmingly positive because these add to the game's overall image and the entirety of pros and cons and thus tend be the most helpful ones during a buyer decision process. So please go for it!

It wasn't quite like that. There were times when I was enjoying it and other times I had to slog through. The slog finally got to me tho.
By the way: as a Steam user I'm always glad to find constructive and well-written negative reviews of games that are rated overwhelmingly positive...
Yeah, I think so too. if a game's sales have really hit its target market than most buyers will be happy with it. But that doesn't mean it's going to be something that most Steam users or the average Steam user will like. We need details to help us figure out whether we're in that target market or not. Thanks very much for your response.

No, it is not as no game will please everyone. I have been deceived by games in the past, I am sure nearly everyone has. I kept hearing good things about a particular game so I looked at it, wishlisted it and was "lucky" enough to win it. But even with 96% positive reviews I was not that fond of the game in the end. It is great that you detailed your reasons for disliking the game, though its probably rare for a giveaway creator to even check up to see if you've played it, let alone reviewed it (unless its a group thing).

If you're going to write a review, it should always be an honest and comprehensive one.
I never write Steam reviews because I don't want to deal with the drama that can come with it (a lot of gamers are very over protective of the games they like), but I do write up small reviews that I keep for myself in case I ever think about going back to a game.

No, why would you even need to ask that? It's not like the GA creator made the game they're giving away (in almost most instances, anway)

No, I do not care as long as the winner marked received. The winner can whatever after that.

I think you should blacklist the GA creator and tell why. LOL JK

What is true is true.
If the game is bad is bad and it deserve a bad review. Doesnt matter how you received it. At the end, it made you waste your time.
When i disagree about bad reviews is when they write a negative review because people want to boycott the game or dev for some silly reason except the game itself.

Thanking the giveaway creator and playing your won game is showing respect. Whether you like the game or not is entirely unrelated.

People's tastes in games are different...
The person giving away the game isn't the person who developed the game... so it's irrelevant....
Most of the time we are giving away games we haven't played before ourself or we are giving away a game we personally don't want or wouldn't like and feel why let it go to waste... maybe someone else might like it...

It's perfectly okay - you're being respectful to the rest of the Steam community that might read reviews before deciding to purchase!

I would think that the giveaway creator would appreciate your honesty more.
It's not like you gave up after a few minutes or an hour (though I've had a few games where I had to do that) - at 20+ hours you've clearly given the game a fair try. If it doesn't hold your interest after that much time, then that's unfortunate, but there's no helping it.
As a giveaway creator, at worst I may be disappointed that you didn't like a game as much as I did, but if you've tried to play it and still don't like it, I'm sure I'll understand and sympathize with your complaints.
And I think both the giveaway creator and other potential users would appreciate a constructive and well thought out negative review. For example, Slime Rancher is rated Overwhelmingly Positive, and I've read great things about it, but I just tried the demo and discovered that I don't like it and it's not for me. I'm sure I'm not the only one.

I'm usually pretty good about playing and completing my wins, but I just had to (for my sanity's sake) abandon a won game after about 20 hours of play. There was a lot to like about the game but my enjoyment waxed and waned with the game's many design flaws. The game has strongly positive reviews but I can't believe more than a very small subset of Steam gamers would like or appreciate the game tho many would be attracted to the game's cute graphics style. Had I known, I would have never put it on my wishlist (and thus never entered a GA for it).
Probably I'll just forget about it, but I got to wondering if it would be appropriate to leave a "not recommended" review on Steam of a won game. What do you think?
