I play most of the games I win, but in some cases I enter giveaways for games I have played before but don't own on steam. I might replay them if I win them, but they won't exactly be on the top of the list so it might take a while... That doesn't mean I don't appreciate them though. :)

1) I am too lazy to look up the stats or install scripts...but I'm still trying to win Maize...it's a short game and I would probably finish it the day I win xD...and I suspect a lot of people who won weren't actually interested in the game
The Turing Test is another one I would really like to play...but no luck so far :(
2) I gave up on winning Deus Ex: Mankind Divided...just bought it and played through it twice in one weekend xD
3) Infinifactory, The Flame in the Flood and Sam & Max 3
I played all of them...The Flame in the Flood was a little disappointing though...got repetetive very fast

Maize GA with 2 copies: https://www.steamgifts.com/giveaway/Yil2q/maize
I won Maize and Turing Test on here and beat them both!

I don't think that many people enter the GAs to actually play the games. Most probably do it just because they are free. If I really like the game, I create a GA for Playing Appreciated group, that way I know that the winner will at least try it out.

I'm too lazy to create a table and fill it with all this info, but I'm sure I'd find similar results and tbh I want to avoid facepalming in the morning because that's what's gonna happen If I see people with 0 Sg wins played, while having won titles like those you listed. xD
If there is one thing I've noticed is that most people with more than 2-3k games on steam seems to have stopped caring about the games they win here a long time ago, because they've become just a +1 for them.
Most of them are here just for the thrill of winning, for that magical moment when they open sg and a happy cat greets them. Some of them spend huge amounts of money every month just to have higher chances of seeing that legendary cat. For them, SG is more akin to a casino than anything.
At the end of the day, much more than sad and pathetic, doing this shows a huge lack of respect towards other people's money, since most of the games that you listed are not only good, but also expensive. :/

I have noticed the longer ive been a part of the community the less I enter.
I went threw a phase of getting as many games as possible when i had very few. Mostly for the option of choosing games on my mood.
I would get whatever I could, collecting games for future playing. Anything that looked semi neat, interesting or types of games ive never played.
Now I only enter those I would play for certain and usually give away games I Get for free on sites like alienware etc.
to random people on my friends list that I hope might enjoy it.While I save non free games for SG.
+1'ing has greatly lost its appeal now that I have a backlog to keep my happy!
Since you can collect and play the games. It is what enticed me to steam originally.
To have a library where I didnt need to keep track of physical discs and serial numbers at the same time. where if you lost one, the other become useless. Was such a pain for someone like me ^ ^
The stuff I give away as long as it makes the person happy, I do not really mind if they play it.
But it bonds me too the people who I see playing a game I have given them. Makes me extra happy :D

1) It changes quite often but for now Night in the Woods and OneShot.
2) Epistory and Sunless Sea. I was hyped for Epistory but didn't play it right away anyway. But when I've finally tried it out it was well worth it. I was hyped for Sunless Sea after giving it a try during free weekend. A few weeks later it appeared in the bundle and I was so excited about it. Well, I haven't launched the game since free weekend anyway...
3) Call of Juarez and Pony Island. I've had fun with both these games.
Honorable mentions:
1) Renowned Explorers, Styx
2) Beaten: SUPERHOT, Antichamber, Dead Synchronicity / In backlog: The Long Dark, Cities: Skylines, Shift Happens, This War of Mine, The Deadly Tower of Monsters, Life is Strange.
3) Gems: Stardew Valley, The Last Door, Hue, Invisible Inc. / Backlog of shame: all won games but the most notable are Starbound, Bayonetta, Transistor, Dragon's Dogma, The Wolf Among Us, Pillars of Eternity. Some great games didn't want to run on my laptop so I didn't mention them here.

I wanted to follow on with your research and went through my entries.
There was no issues with Games you hope to win. But there were issues with Games you hoped to win, but ended up getting elsewhere and Games Won category and gave it up while gathering data for the 1st category.
For the Games you hope to win I have following result.
Want to win | Number of GA | <10% achievements | ≥10% achievements | Happy winners |
---|---|---|---|---|
The Witness | 9 | 6 | 3 | 33.33% |
The Turing Test | 13 | 7 | 6 | 46.15% |
The conditions I set for collecting data were:
At first the data looks good. Almost 1 happy winner for every 3 GA or 1 happy winner for every 2 GA respectively. But consider this, for any user to have chance at <200 he/she must be either in group or invite only GA. So the issue I had was the data I collected. Almost 80% were Playing Appreciated, Actually Playing Games and Unlucky 7. Since Playing Appreciated has a rule that the winner should play the game won within 1 month and Actually Playing Games also has similar but with a longer time-frame, data here collected is completely biased and doesn't represent the reality at all.
So I collected extra variables considering Playing Appreciated(PA) because of the 1 month rule, the impact is seen greatly for this data.
Game | Number of GA | PA Entry | PA <10% | PA ≥10% | PA Happy Winners | !PA Entry | !PA <10% | !PA ≥10% | !PA Happy Winners |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
The Witness | 9 | 5 | 2* | 3 | 60.00% | 4 | 4 | 0 | 0.00% |
The Turing Test | 13 | 6 | 1 | 5 | 83.33% | 7 | 6 | 1 | 14.28% |
It seems 1 user had been kicked for not following the rule
These stats looks kinda sad. Looking outside the group happy winners are hard to find. But I am glad that groups like Playing Appreciated and Actually Playing Games are changing that, matching happy winners with their happy wins XD.
And as for other categories I didn't have a respectable amount of data. Only could collect 2-3 entries.

...I chose to limit it to giveaways with a maximum of 100 entries...
As TFrostPG stated above, by only looking at GAs with a max of 100 entries, you are likely getting a specific sample, not a general sample. I am interested in this myself, I will review later when I have a chance, but I think I am going to check the last 10 or so entries for those games to provide a (hopefully) slightly more random sample.

A bunch of the games I chose have only a few achievements (10 or 11), so 10% isn't a really good indicator. Since I have played the 4 games I own, I used my own discretion to decide on who was a "happy winner"
Want to win
Hue - 6/11 unplayed, remainder "happy winners"
Firewatch - 8/11 unplayed, 2 "happy winners"
Got elsewhere
Transistor 7/10 unplayed, 1 "happy winner"
Bastion - 8/10 unplayed, 1 "happy winner"
Won
Hacknet - 7/10 unplayed, none with more than half of the achievements
The Stanley Parable - 8/10 unplayed, other 2 have 2 achievements
In the end, I think choosing the last 10 or so GAs (that ended 6 months or longer ago) is a better random sample, but also more depressing...

I have a lot of free time, but it's not uninterrupted stretches of free time where I can game like I used to.
I should probably stop entering giveaways on the site, but it's nice to win the games you know will get played eventually.

Want to win | <10% achievements | ≥10% achievements | Happy winners |
---|---|---|---|
Bayonetta | 9 | 10 | 53% |
CrossCode | 5 | 2 | 29% |
It feels worse when someone says that they're excited to play it but never do, and since CrossCode doesn't have achievements I just used used play time instead.
Got elsewhere | <10% achievements | ≥10% achievements | Happy winners |
---|---|---|---|
Life is Strange: Before the Storm | 5 | 2 | 29% |
Hyper Light Drifter | 11 | 3 | 21% |
Dishonored - Definitive Edition | 14 | 2 | 13% |
Won | <10% achievements | ≥10% achievements | Happy winners |
---|---|---|---|
RWBY: Grimm Eclipse | 1 | 2 | 66% |
Mafia II | 3 | 2 | 40% |
Thanks again for the games, people who sent me games :)

Had to be a bit more lenient with the restrictions as there wouldn't be much of a stats otherwise. Yeah, not so good looking...

So I again went through all my entries, thinking the data collection restriction is biased i.e. GA with <200 entries. Earlier Result
Now I have the following results. For more details see the spreedsheet.
The Witness | No of GA Entered | <10% achievements | ≥10% achievements | Happy winners |
---|---|---|---|---|
All GA | 83 | 75 | 8 | 9.64% |
Public only | 70 | 65 | 5 | 7.14% |
Group & Whitelist | 12 | 9 | 3 | 25.00% |
Invite Only GA | 1 | 1 | 0 | 0.00% |
PA/APG | 5 | 2 | 3 | 60.00% |
!PA/APG (Group) | 7 | 7 | 0 | 0.00% |
!PA/APG (ALL) | 78 | 73 | 5 | 6.41% |
The Witness being my top wishlisted game, this stats makes me depressed. Hoping that at least they will play later in the future.
The Turing Test | No of GA Entered | <10% achievements | ≥10% achievements | Happy winners |
---|---|---|---|---|
All GA | 70 | 46 | 24 | 34.28% |
Public only | 51 | 35 | 16 | 31.37% |
Group & Whitelist | 9 | 3 | 6 | 33.33% |
Invite Only GA | 10 | 8 | 2 | 20.00% |
PA/APG | 6 | 1 | 5 | 83.33% |
!PA/APG (Group) | 1 | 1 | 0 | 0.00% |
!PA/APG (ALL) | 64 | 45 | 19 | 29.68% |
Now this stats is completely different then than of The Witness. Surprised to see so many Happy winners at the public GA.

Hyper Light Drifter | 22 | 6 | 27% |

Ori and the Blind Forest | 7 | 7 | 50% |
Most of the GAs I found for these via archive are invite only and group GA, so I can't actually access most of them. Of the ones I can access, quite a few of them are part of Playing Appreciated and Actually Playing Games group, which I feel may skew the result.
Comment has been collapsed.
Wow that's some pretty depressing results. I try and enter only games I have a direct interest in playing, and usually they are all wishlisted prior to the giveaway. I guess for some people they're quite happy to take a $60 game and just add it to their library without even looking at it again, which is sad when there are others who would have loved to play those games.
i can't really do your tests for myself at the moment, as there's not really any games I'm really wanting that are being given away enough to get meaningful data. (And it would make me sad to see in any case)
Comment has been collapsed.
These stats are vastly inflated. I recommend going to the Archive page and doing a search for the game. You'll get a real sense of how many people play the public listings.
Here's a script to make the check a bit easier. It adds links to the Archive page that take you right to the Winners page. https://greasyfork.org/en/scripts/33422-steam-gifts-archive-link-to-winners

Hey SG!
I have quite much to do this month, but right now I'm waiting for a delayed train and needed find something to do for a while, and I came up with this for some reason.
I love playing computer games, and winning a game I'm excited about playing (and then going on to play it) is so much fun. I also really enjoy it the other way around, when a game I decided to buy for a giveaway is won by someone who plays it, and really enjoys it! So much more fun to spend money to give someone hours of enjoyment rather than spend €20 just to make someone's "6342" into a "6343" and give them some cards worth €0.25 they can spend to come a bit closer to levelling up on Steam...
Games you are/were excited about and want to/wanted to win and entered giveaways for. What happened with those games given away, that you didn't win? This is a bit inspired by a discussion by LastM, and I hope it will motivate some of you to play some of those gems of games you might have won but not started playing yet :)
Think of two good choices for each of these categories:
1) Games you hope to win (but haven't won yet)
2) Games you hoped to win, but ended up getting elsewhere (bought yourself, traded for, got as a birthday/holiday gift etc)
3) Games you hoped to win, and did actually win
Check your entries for these games
I chose to limit it to giveaways with a maximum of 100 entries ("high chance giveaways"), and giveaways older than 6 months. You might want to have other restrictions if you don't enter many giveaways with less than 100 entries.
To see what happened with the games without too much trouble, I used the Did they even play script. I counted how many had 10% or more achievements, and how many had less. I calculated the percentage of users with 10%+ achievements as well (I call these "happy winners" in the chart).
These are the results:
So, for great games, seems like around 20-30% of the winners play the game 6 months to 3 years after winning. That's actually higher than I thought it would be, so I'm positively surprised! Makes me happy that at least every third/fourth winner of these games goes on playing them!
If you have won any of these games I listed above, but not started them yet, I really recommend you to do so! Actually, I can confess I haven't started The Witcher III myself yet. I know it's a game that would take me long time to get through, and I made sure to finish many other, shorter games I won here on SG before (I finished over 100 won games now), and now I have started my project of playing all three of the games back to back. That will take me quite a while, but see this thread as me challenging myself as well, to play probably the best game I have ever won here.
So, how does it look for the rest of you? If you're curious enough to look.
You can use this for the chart if you want:
...and now my train arrives in just a few minutes. Perfect! I'll get ill by reading at the train, so see you later :)
