So...is this an update to the terraria or they want to sell it ?
Because if the latter one....I dont even. "Hey guys, lets make our game once again with some additional stuff and sell it to the people because you know, why we should update our old game with this additional stuff"

Games like Terraria, Minecraft, can't have a second part, "now instead of updating, we like you to buy the same game again, but we named it 2", like screwing fans and consumers. They can have 1.3, 1.7, 2.0, etc, versions, but not full games, "like 2.0 comes and we like to sell it as a new game, not just as a version"

I never understood this logic. Just because they have been updated for years, does not mean they can not have a sequel or spinoff. Take this Terraria: Otherworld for example. The graphics are totally overhauled and look much better, much smoother. The game will also have an actual storyline, instead of just tossing the player out there to fend for themselves. They also mention this game will have RPG and strategy like elements, two things the originally really did not have. Also, they already announced that this is just a spin-off to Terraria and that they are continuing to work on Terraria 2 as well as the newest Terraria update.
I think sequels, if done right, could be very profitable. If enough changes to the original game, new features, and other elements are added, the games will sell. I personally would love to see a Minecraft 2, with tons of new monsters, different armors, tons of new items and weapons, add a magic system or magical items, an overhaul on the graphics engine, give it an actual storyline, along with tons of new pre-built areas to find/explore, add tower defense elements or RPG quest system in, and the game would be well worth buying.
When it's all said and done, I am very much looking forward to buying Terraria: Otherworld, as well as Terraria 2, and if a Minecraft 2 comes, I'll buy it day one!

So tell me why they cant add this to regular Terraria ? Like adding it as a new game mode ? In update ? Or just in DLC ?
The guy above is right. For a game to have a prequel/sequel/spinoff, it needs to have an actual storyline, storysetting and and all that shiz
You cant make a sequel to a sandbox game...
Its like the Mojang would say "Hey Minecraft fans, you know what, we are making a Minecraft RPG story with quests and shiz but we are basically taking the whole Minecraft, add this new stuff and sell it again as a new and fresh game. Why ? Oh well because fuck you"
We are living in fucked up ages....some time ago that stuff wouldnt be acceptable.

Borderlands... Oh wait, there is a story... somewhat...
Ah! How about Saints Row? or Duke Nukem? or Serious Sam?
Terraria was (and still is) updated for free all those years. Unlike, f.e., Lara Croft, or Batman (any of them imho), or Sleeping Dogs (well, now it's a one package, but look back just a few months) with TONS of DLCs that basically just add skins - but cost real money.
So who said that developers can't make something new, be it spin-off or sequel/prequel or new mod or whatever - and make some money from it? At least in case of Re-logic they earned that rite! Oh, and btw - go to Terraria forums and look for players-created content - there are enough stories written already (and some of those are actually good) to constitute for game lore and storyline.

I dont even...if you dont see any difference between any of the games you mentioned and pure sandbox game like terraria or minecraft then sir you have a serious problem
Making the same sandbox game with few new features and selling it as a fresh product with a full retail price is just a simple ripoff, nothing else

I didn't say there is no difference whatsoever, did I? But lets agree on what we are talking about here first, ok?
From my point of view question here is: "Can developers make a new game (mod, whatever) which is a bit different from previous one - and release it as a stand-alone or DLC - and charge for it? Or do they obligated to provide it as an update/DLC for already released game for free?" and not about genre, storyline and other "quality" questions.
About "slightly different" (or not)... On the wave of Minecraft and Terraria success there has been released a big number of sandbox games - and quite a few of them pretty much non-playable or at least not enjoyable (and I LOVE sandbox games). Terraria was quite interesting even when Skeletron was the final boss and no events existed - and had tons of content added, it looks quite different now compare to even 1.1. Also there's console and mobile versions (with their different stuff) - and I will buy those when I have some more time to play them.
About retail prices... From the moment of release and to at least coming 1.3 update Terraria was/is updated for free (all versions) - so far Re-logic haven't done what a lot of other developers did (and that was what I've pointed out): releasing each new feature/character/skin/weapon as a paid DLC which often cost about as much (if no more) as some stand-alone games. And comparing price tags - for me and my kidsTerraria already worth tenfold its full price (not mentioning sales) and provide more replayability than some games that cost 2 or 3 times more.
Of course, to each his/her own... From my point of view GTA and CS just repeating themselves over and over - and charging anew for each new release and DLC. So that what I would call rip-off if I was asked. But people want it, like it, buying it - so here's that. And if I (and other fans of Terraria) would like to see a new product from developers of my favorite game - do you have a right to judge us?
I don't care if it would be a new game or a "new mod" for Terraria - I would buy it either way (providing it would be a quality product - but so far Re-logic is keeping bar high enough so not to worry about this). And a lot of people here agree with that. So far it's not even beta - it's pre-alpha! - and it already looks quite intriguing. Who said there wouldn't be more to it by the moment of release? And maybe even after - like with Terraria?
BTW - what is your opinion of Civilization franchise in this case? Yes, it's not a sandbox, but look at all those DLCs and versions!!! (And I love CIv as well, btw).

im pretty confident they cant add this as a "dlc" or update, because its gonna clearly run on a different engine,I mean the graphics...they are nothing like in terraria as it is now, probably new game mechanics and stuff will be added too,the only reason I see this as a new game is that its gonna run on a different engine and why its not gonna be an update...well...some people will probably not be happy if they just delete the entire old terraria that will have different stuff in it,like different bossess and stuff they dont plan to add in the new terraria that is clearly also gonna take place in a different universe, also another reason - everyone needs money! you cant be a cheapass dickhead on every post about " NEW SEQUAL TO BLAH BLAH IS COMING OUT " and then having to whine about it since its not an " update " for the previous game -.- do you honestly think making a game is free and easy ? cmon...I agree there have been many examples of needless standalone games that could have been just a dlc or an " update " to the old one...like the other guy said there are many games about which THEY SHOULD HAVE NEVER BEEN STANDALONE since the only difference between the previous game and the next game is purely just new maps, story continuation,a few gameplay upgrades that could have just been a DLC for the previous game since its running on the same engine and they can make it in a way so it won't conflict the previous game, but yeah lets not be a dick and brag about it...cuz HEY ITS MY FAV GAME!

cough cough Homm3 chronicles cough cough
All throughout the history of gaming they've been sequels, which added almost nothing, you have no idea what you are talking about.
But really now, this new project not only has completely new graphical assets, but is posed as different thematically and gameplay-wise. If you think that's not enough for a stand-alone, you are a cheapskate. Not to mention, that engine limitation might make it nigh-impossible to add all of this as a separate mode/dlc/whatever.
And saying that there should be story for a sequel is just plain stupid. There are tons of sequels that are not related by story or even set in the same universe. Sometimes franchise is dictated by the gameplay alone.

Of all the bad things in gaming industry you're complaining about new Terraria game?
Terraria keeps getting updated even though it's almost 4 years old. Free of charge.
To make things even better, it's a cheap game that gets regular discounts (I think I've seen it go as low as €2).
Is it so wrong that the developers want to move on to a new game? Is €10 for a new game after 4 years going to break your bank?
Meanwhile, there are companies like 2K with their nickel and diming and no one says a word. It took releasing a €50 game with €80 worth of DLC to get people to complain.
But yes, let's make a fuss about Terraria, why don't we?

And ? Is it forbidden to make ones opinion based on any shred of info, hm ?
If it turns out to be a completely different game then Im ok with this
But as for now it doesnt even look like they are trying to make a different game
Back in the days this stuff was called an expansion pack or addon. Not a new game

You're jumping to conclusions and blowing things out of proportion way too early.
I'm a huge opponent of money milking in gaming industry and that's the reason why I boycott a lot of AAA publishers, but attacking new Terraria is simply not justified.

Sorry, game studios can't pay the bills with hopes and dreams. If you'd like additional content you'll have to pay for it.

My thoughts precisely, mate, the aesthetics are distinctly Starbound-esque... which I'm not entirely sure is a good thing; I rather preferred Terraria's own take on pixel art. The GUI/HUD could also use some work, although I can hardly level any genuine criticism against pre-alpha screenshots.

My only concern is that it looks like it could be multiplayer only and surely by now we've all realized that is code for "man, this game would be better if it wasn't multiplayer only".
Terraria is fantastic though, so hey, more Terraria is good. I can't believe how long I sat on the fence about playing it at all because almost as soon as I started I was totally hooked.

Single player and multiplayer in Terraria are essentially identical. The main difference is you get some company in multiplayer and you can do some PvP if you wish. I don't see how they can make new Terraria "multiplayer only" unless they restrict playing without at least 2 players. It's still going to be a game about exploring, building, crafting and fighting.

Worst case, it could require an active connection for a global universe system. Maybe when you leave one planet there's a chance you end up on one that someone else has already visited. Or they're still there. Kind of like Elite Dangerous. That'd be cool if it was an option that you could disable.
Also, setting up multiplayer games in Terraria is a pain. Maybe they're just making a feature of how easy it will be this time.

I am so excited for this!! I seen the teaser trailer earlier and was mass messaging all my Terraria buddies, who are all equally excited for this! Spend a couple hours on the forums as well, reading over some of the things being discussed! All I need to know now is when does it comes out, how much will it cost, and will I be able to buy this multiple times so I have it on my PC as well as on my consoles!

I don´t say that Starbound is a bad game, but creators make a very big hype about Starbound. I was expecting a lot more of the game.
I tried the last update, but I continue thinking that Terraria is best.
But this is only my opinion.
(sorry if I make some gramatical errors)

This is not DLC, this is a standalone game. It is also not Terreria 2, the developers say.
"This is a spin-off, much like Bad Company to the Battlefield franchise."

Meh, I'll pass.

So they're adding new races and the technology to travel between planets. Does anyone else think that Starbound and Terraria should just pool resources and make one game? They're pretty much the same already!
Don't get me wrong, I played a lot of Terraria and I'm getting into Starbound now as well. But seriously.
