So I bought Deadlight in the most recent sale. Was looking forward to playing it greatly but it crashes!

It crashes in the same spot every time. Just after the first level loads I run to the right jump over a small ledge onto a dumpster, kick open the door and after he pushes the shelving over it will crash. It is also normally a blue screen of death crash too, or it just makes my monitor go to sleep and then I need to hold in the power button.

I have tried validating files and it says everything is fine.

Any ideas?

Uninstall and reinstall. That seems to be the most common remedy for problems similar to that.

Yeah I may have to try that...4 gig down the drain. Hurts when your an Australian :P Although i would have thought validating files would have done same thing.

I hear ya! If you've already tried validation, then that's the best way. Is it asking or complaining about anything specific?

Nah it just crashes to a black screen, once to a blue screen, so no error messages that I have seen.

I do know the cut scene before the level starts had no sound, only subtitles which is another problem other people are having but I don't think they are connected.

Blue Screen, BSOD? Can you control your PC after that Black Screen comes? Like starting Task Manager? Did you encounter any problems while installing? I had the same problem with Fallen Earth, it was because of Bad Sectors in the D Partition of my HDD where I installed the game.

Nope, cannot control my computer after it crashes and results in a black screen, can't alt tab out of the game or get to task manager as it jsut send my monitor to sleep.

The only issue I have had with installing is that the visual c++ tries to install every time I start the game up, but not sure if that is a problem.

And yeah blue screen of death sometimes occurs.

How does one fix bad sectors if that were the case?

I fixed that by formatting that partition.

Before reinstall, try library > right click on the game > properties > local files > verify integrity.

Also make sure your video drivers are up to date. Good luck! :)

Thanks,

I might try updating the video drivers too before reinstalling. I have already tried the verify integrity, but IMay try again just to be sure.

i recently bought this aswell cant say i have the same crash but it would not start for a while had issues with first time setup ended up having to change some registry stuff. Then I find the audio drops out in places and jumping can be buggy aswell, i get the impression its a bad port :(

which is a shame its a nice game

It is a shame, I was looking forward to playing it! What you said jogged my memory though as I still currently have issues with first time setup, it always tries to install the Visual c++ thing every time I start the game.

Could be your Visual C++ screwing up... What Operating System are you using? Windows 7, not 8 hopefully?

  1. Run "regedit.exe"
  2. Find this path
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Valve\Steam\Apps\211400
  3. Check that you have three DWORD keys inside with these names.
    "DirectX"
    "VCRedist 2008"
    "VCRedist 2010"
  4. If you run game normally, create them manually if they doesnt exist, and set them all to "1".
  5. Close "regedit.exe" and run Deadlight.

That should patch your Visual C++ issue, but also ensure it's installed correctly or run it separately or from another game.

This forum removes the slashs for the path, but you get the idea...

Google those as well and download the required versions to clean install - if they had an issue when installing with the game, or you can also normally find them on just about any Game DVD, game install folder, etc. It's rare for you not to have them installed already, but some games require various file versions and they could get messed up installing, due to Windows File Protection blocking it.

So I went into regedit and found the location you specified. None of the files were there so I created them. Ran Deadlight again and it went through the reinstall process again. I thought we may have been on the right track as I got further than normal but it crashed a only a minute or two worth of gameplay ahead of where it used to.

Oddly enough when I just tried to go back into deadlight it said again that it wanted to install the 2010 version of visual c ++ or watever it is.

Edit: Also just tried the manual install and it said there is a newer version already.

I've got the game and it's never crashed or glitched... then again I haven't had one single crash since the entire life of my pc.

It's a great game and I wouldn't call it a bad port. Keep your drivers up-to-date with the latest stable releases if that's the case.

Not sure, but for you it's probably physical hard drive corruption? If your verify files is also crashing and it's only around that area of files. Suggest performing a Check/Scan Disk on your hard drive.

Ah sorry, I didn't make myself exactly clear, verifying files completes with out any problems and says everything is ok. I will edit my first post to make that clear. But thanks for the ideas, I will update my drivers to start, then perhaps do a scan.

Interesting, I finished the game with no problem.

Sounds to me like the problem isn't the game files themselves like something the game calls thru your video card.

Check your video drivers is my best guess.

Yeah I just installed the latest drivers and the same thing happened.

My next step will be to reinstall the whole game when i get the chance

I would honestly be surprised that a game reinstall would change anything. I say that because you mention getting a blue screen.. those don't happen on any basic game crash. And yeah it's kinda sad but latest drivers don't always mean best drivers. Good luck with that problem of yours :\ Deadlight is a good game.

Yeah you are probably right, just annoying because every other game works fine(I think) but it must be something to do with my hardware.

I might install it on my laptop just so I can play it. I wonder if lowering the graphics on my pc could help.

It's worth a try .. I had something like that happening with Sniper Elite Nazi Zombies.. playing with full graphics would crash the game every once in a while.. I lowered a few things a little and am not getting crashes anymore. Kinda sucks but at least I can play.
