Which one should I get?
Gaming with a laptop will always be far more expensive than gaming with a desktop.
If you already have a desktop, chances are you only need to replace a few parts (unless it's like 8-10 years old)
I tend to build an entire new desktop every 4 generations, and then I only upgrade the GPU if needed.

Ah, of course, just my luck.
And nah, I have laptop now.

Slowing down? Do you clean it regularly? Have you ever changed the thermal paste on the CPU since you acquired it? How many years of use it has?
Tell me what is your budget for a new PC also

If you mean physically opening it to clean then nope, never did that. The computer dude did that when he tried to figure out if there was anything to be done to make it perform better, but came to the conclusion that it would be far more expensive to try and upgrade than to just get a new one.
I don't really have a budget in mind because I don't know what's reasonable price nowadays but if I'd have to throw numbers then I guesssss I wouldn't go over $1800/€1500/£1400.

If you're dead set on a laptop, then here are a few suggestions. Keep in mind, I'm not a laptop user myself, I'm just going based on specs.
The best I can see for the budget you give would be this.

From my understanding, the mobile version of the GTX 10 series gpu's are pretty close to the desktop versions in terms of power, and a 1070 is damn powerful right now, so that looks quite good I think. However, if you'd want to save a bit of cash, you could go for...

It downgrades you to a 1060 for graphics, but if it is indeed close to desktop performance, you should easily play any game at good frame rates on high - ultra. However, like I said, I'm not much of a laptop person, and I can't speak from personal experience on those, so you may want to ask more laptop savvy people what they think of them.

Thanks, I'll make a note of those and look at them more at some point.

Hmm, interesting, I'll make a note to look into that stuff, thanks.

What's your budget? Can't really make any worthwhile recommendations without knowing that.

I don't really have a budget in mind because I don't know what's reasonable price nowadays, and because so far I'm just trying to figure out what info I need to even look for suitable things. But if I'd have to throw numbers then I guesssss I wouldn't go over $1800/€1500/£1400.

With that budget you should be able to get a decent gaming laptop.
Movac is right about the minimum specs you should aim for;
Geforce 1060 6GB or better (you can probably get a 1070 with that budget, which I would definitely recommend)
16GB of RAM
500+ GB SSD (or a cheap 256GB SSD for your OS/apps combined with a 1+ TB HDD for games)
Intel i5 or i7 CPU (AMDs new CPUs on desktops are good, but they don't have an equivalent for laptops yet)
Screen resolution of 1920x1080 or better
Example: https://www.gentechpc.com/Asus-ROG-STRIX-GL502VS-DB71-nVidia-GTX-1070-G-Sync-p/asus-gl502vs-db71.htm
With a desktop you can upgrade later, but for a laptop you better be sure you like what you get since you'll be stuck with it until your next PC.

You don't give a lot of information on what you're planning to do with it. If your only intention is playing stationary at home a PC will always be most cost efficient and it's upgradeable / easier to repair components, a laptop you should consider if gaming is secondary and mobility for working is priority. Even for couch gaming a big laptop for gaming is usually very heavy, thus bulky.

Hmm, well my intention is basically to do "everything" with it - including playing games, watching Netflix, visiting sites like this. That's pretty much it.
Ah, that's too bad. I've just come to the conclusion that PC is much more restrictive, you need to sit there in front of it to do things and only have so much variety in how you can sit before you are hurting. Also can't easily just move it to another location and instantly be good to go, need several wires and double the power outlets.
With laptop I've really liked the ability to just be in any position I feel like (usually lying down) and just not being tied down to a single spot.

Even the meme answer has more answers now than laptop, I am amazed I never knew laptops were so hated!
As for portability, I just like changing positions and I often lie down when playing games or watching something, so both of those are impossible on desktop.

I'm using a laptop (one pretty similar to this one) because I need the mobility, so obviously I don't hate laptops ^^
That being said, there are only 2 good reasons to pick a laptop over desktop IMO: 1) mobility 2) huge space constraints. You can get "desktop-class" power in a laptop, but it will cost you a lot more (I used to say twice as much, that's probably exaggerated... but not that much)

Glad to see you back (both here and on Steam). A was a tad worried due to the long absence, but glad to see that you are (relatively?) well.:)
Since I can't really offer too much help with regards to computer advice, I will just give the thread a bump!
BUMP!

Welcome back! 3 months is a long time without SG. Did you have any withdrawal symptoms? :P
I wish I could offer some advice on the laptop, but I don't own one myself and haven't shopped for one in years so I'm a bit out of the loop. Bump and good luck! :)

Greetings, SG community. I’ve returned from my absence of 80 days (as counted by Steam). How’s life been treating y’all? I see SG itself has gotten some changes, very interesting.
Many things happened during my time away, but I’m trying not to vent with a massive wall of text, instead I’ll focus on a subject that people might be able to help me with.
My computer is relatively old and has been slowing down for about a year. Late this May it took a dive for the worse, hitting me with some blue screens of death and struggling to perform. I had the OS reinstalled in hopes of extending its life span and it worked, but it is still evident that I need to get a new one as soon as possible.
Now, I’m what the kids call a moron and thus helpless in this matter. I’m turning to the community for advice on what to look for when shopping. What I’m looking for is (of course) one that’ll handle gaming as well as possible, but I think I’m going to have to get a laptop so I know that’s troublesome for getting a good one. Any tips or opinions are welcome, or even just links to decent ones to purchase. I’ll still consider a desktop but laptop seems like the one I’m gonna go with.
Blah, blah, blah, help a moron out and talk to me like you’re explaining to a toddler.
Blah, blah, blah, obligatory I’m back with trash train
I’m going to vent a little during the train but that can just be ignored.
