Everyone's self rule should be ' YOU TRADE FIRST '.
Of course, that'd result in a stalemate.
Lesson of the day : Don't trust anyone.

No, even then...
Actually, why didn't you just make him trade a gift-item while you traded the keys in the same trade? Why don't people do that? Both people show their items, so you'll know when it's a scam when they don't show theirs.

Yea, I should've been more careful, but after just waking up being a bit groggy, and the sudden excitement of a new game, wasn't thinking at my fullest x.x
It sucks being a poor person and then having something that can gain you something taken from you

Lol. You didn't even check the dudes account. You were narrow minded like you were staring at ridiculously hot girl that's way out of your league and paid out of your ass for it without realizing it was shady as fuck. The hot girl being Brutal Legend in this scenario.
I've traded for and with steam keys just fine. Couple times me going first (after I saw they were legit) and sometimes them going first. I never had to ask "YOU GO FIRST" or "NO YOU GO FIRST" in any of these trades.

He never posted a comment or anything on steamtrades, he just added me up and talked about a trade, which at the time I wasn't thinking was strange at all because it's happened plenty of times before and it was all legit.. but this time, not so much

"that'll teach me to never trust a trade involving a game key again"
No, that'll teach you to not rush into trades, and make you actually think about what you're doing.
There's plenty of legit traders who trade keys.

At the time in my head I was thinking "well if he gives half the key, that verifies that the key exists" but about 2 seconds later I was thinking "boy, I'm a fuckin' twat"

Totally my fault, 100%
but if I don't ever trust trades for keys ever again, I'll be more cautious about them in the future, not that I wont ever do them again.
That's how I learn to be careful, by not trusting, ever.

In my opinion, the person that goes first should be the one with a CD-key. Whenever I trade CD-keys, I always go first, regardless of rep (unless the rep of the other trader is severely low).
Try to be more careful next time you trade, check every bit of info you can about the other trader.

Step 1.
Step 2.
Always, ALWAYS check steam profile and (on a right side below inv.) you can find links to steam rep, steam trade etc. So check that too.
Step 3.
Be careful! Trading steam games is like sex! You can never be too careful when it comes down to protection!

Scammed for the first time on steamtrades.. wanted 10 cards for brutal legend, said it was a game key, i asked for him to post half (guess he did just random letters and numbers, go figure), didn't check his account, another mistake, just went with it all because I was excited about a new game, hit accept trade and he says thanks and deletes me... now i went from 15 cards to 5 cards
that'll teach me to never trust a trade involving a game key again
