The ban is understandable, but Steam should warn you first. I change my passwords regularly on many services for security; I don't mind a temporary restriction afterwards but a notice beforehand would be nice.

1 Week for me. It should tell you on the "Change Password" screen rather than some FAQ. Not a huge deal but it would have been nice to know before doing it.

Yesterday my cousin got a 15day trading ban because he didnt have steamguard activated.

We require Steam Guard to be enabled for 15 days to help protect your items and Steam Wallet funds from being misused by somebody who may have illicitly obtained your password.

First off -
Anyway, as others here have said, it's a security feature to prevent people who perhaps obtained access to your account through maybe a PC you didn't log out of Steam with (maybe a friends' PC), or someone who somehow obtained access to your e-mail account and thus can defeat Steamguard protection, from logging in, changing your password, then stealing your inventory items.

I know how this goes. first you get some generated reply, than they ask to check your password, then you have to proof it is your account. Meanwhile a week has gone by, and all your stuff is gone. People need to be responsible for their own safety, instead they held Steam accountable for their problems.
Now you create a problem, people with less secure password will not change their passwords because they dont want to be locked out.

I agree that people need to be careful with their account credentials - just the other day, I was at a friends' and logged in to Sgifts / Steam, but used an onscreen keyboard for it instead of the actual keyboard to be on the safe side, logged out when I went home, and de-authorised all other PCs via Steam when I got home - but that doesn't mean Steam support should be as lacking in their prioritisation, ways of dealing with issues, and be so generally difficult to get anything done with as they are. We all know the horror stories of people's problems with Steam support.
Aside from that, people who ever used an insecure / simple / short password are people who are unaware of the risk of being careless with their account. Them not wanting to get locked out won't change that in any way. The problem isn't that they're being given a motivation for not changing their passwords, it's that they lack motivation to change their passwords to begin with due to ignorance.
This thread and its' information in no way influences that aspect as they weren't planning on changing their password to begin with.

I agree that it is nice to know that a password leak won't mean all your items are sold/traded away instantly. It's just too bad they don't give you a heads up before letting you lock yourself out :)

I don't see a trading ban on your profile at all though dude.. Where are you being gated? Where does it tell you you can't trade / market stuff? And what pop-up shows, then?

If I try to trade it closes the window and puts a message in the chat window that I must wait 5 days due to password change.
For Market, the option to sell is greyed out and if I hover over it it tells me the same thing.

Then it's not a ban. There's an actual feature in Steam where people who scam others etc, get an actual trade ban manually implemented by Steam support. It is shown in red letters on your profile, like a VAC ban, and shows others you're not to be trusted in trades. The thread title is misleading and confusing, now.

I don't know about you but I don't read the FAQ every time I do something on Steam. It would be nice if they told you when attempting to perform the action.

A pop-up warning on the "change password" screen is surely not beyond Valve's programming team. IMHO there really isn't any excuse for not warning people about fundamental issues such as this.

How exactly is it fundamental? Majority of people on Steam don't even touch the market, so it's not even a big deal to probably 80% of Steam's clients, at least. If you're interested in using the market, suggest you read that stuff. Since hey, if you didn't know already, then when you get to around 200 transactions, you have to give them your tax info or you're not able to use the market anymore.

It fundamentally affects changes people's trading experience, and was certainly a fundamental problem for the original poster... The appearance of a warning box could be set up to be conditional on whether or not the user has any market activity on his/her account, but IMHO this is something people should be warned about above and beyond the regular small-print. If Valve can warn us every time when deleting a crate in TF2 that this cannot be reversed (What? No shit?) then they can surely give people a heads up on this matter.
The tax info only applies to people in the US. When I hit this ceiling, after confirming I lived in NZ, I carried on as normal.
To be honest, I absolutely welcome the day that Steam trading is considered a taxable activity, as I would make a belting tax deductible loss when offsetting my meagre market income against expenses incurred in the course of making said income. Hardware depreciation, internet connection costs, minor computer repairs, heat and light, etc would far outweigh my trading gains, and leave me with a nice juicy tax write-off against income from other activities.

If you reset your password on an active account you will be restricted from the Steam Community Marketplace for 5 days. If your account has not had any activity for more than 2 months, you will be restricted from the Steam Community Marketplace for 30 days. Note that this does not affect password changes, only password resets.

Likely it's because a password change is going to happen in the case of a stolen account. A waiting period is meant to deter a would be thief from doing any harm to an account that could cost Valve money.
Though I do agree that it would be good if they provided a warning, preferably on the screen to change the password so the person can do whatever they need to in the market first rather than be surprised.

If people are using Steamguard, and aren't stupid enough to use the same password for everything, they should still be protected against any sort of skullduggery.
I do agree that the waiting period is there for that reason, but perhaps Valve should consider making Steamguard mandatory. I thought at one stage it was a requirement for trading, but I could be wrong on that.

The key phrase there is "and aren't stupid enough to use the same password for everything". Because honest truth: your average person has maybe at most a few passwords, and most are variations of each other.
The other thing is that Steamguard is meaningless if the email is compromised. All it takes is the person leaving their email logged in on a shared or public computer and all their accounts can be easily stolen soon after since most accounts do a reset via email without requiring any extra information so even if the password is different, they can steal it via a reset. It is far more common now to steal accounts via getting enough information about the account owner to get a password reset.

Would be nice, but sadly the stupids make it suck for everyone and then blame the companies they have their accounts with and just keep on acting like an idiot. And god forbid that you force them to have account security, nope, they bitch and moan then and then when their account is stolen they bitch and moan that security wasn't good enough. That wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't for the fact that most instances of account theft cost the company the account is with money and that money ends up costing the smart users money in increased costs for goods and services online.

Just so everyone knows (as I just found out the hard way) if you decide to update your password on Steam expect a one week ban from the Market.
Since Steam doesn't like to warn you of these things, I figured I'd at least spread the info.
EDIT: Also, can't bring up the trade window either, same reason. Good times.
