I like to play couch co-op with my kid. I can get him to indulge me with some easier Overcooked levels, a bit of KeyWe (super cute). We best enjoy shooters like Blazing Beaks or Assault Android Cactus+. I haven't yet done a second playthrough of Portal 2 with him, but my first play was fun.

Did you find anything fun in the Steam couch co-op sale? Anything you'd greatly recommend?

I don't do co-op much anymore, but I used to play Sackboy with my younger brother several years ago and remember having fun. Have you played it? The graphics look cleaner and more colorful and detailed.

I've seen it in the list. I haven't looked too deep as I have Little Big Adventure somewhere to play. Do you know if they're similar?

If you mean Little Big Planet then yes they are similar and many think Sackboy is a bit of a stepdown although I have been enjoying it and it's a 3D platformer so it's different but the couch co-op is really fun and inventive.

No clue! I haven't played it in years. Fluffster seems to have a solid idea about it.

I play couch-coop (or nowadays Steam Remote Play Together) with my kids, colleagues and friends (in three different groups, each having different tastes) all the time for many years now.

We have made lists of currently about 2.300 Steam games that support local 4-player and a list with over 650 good local 2-player games. I would post a link here, but then the mods would most likely suspend me for violating the rules and spamming or whatever, so I will just tell you to go to my steam profile for the links if interested. Be warned, though - too much choice can be overwhelming.

I'll have to delve the list when I have time then. Sounds like a deep rabbit hole to get lost in.

Nice curation. I'll take a deeper look but just at a glance, a lot of games I didn't have on my radar already

Most of the games I've played with others are more couch vs/party rather than couch co-op
Nippon Marathon
Boomerang Fu
Marooners

But for co-op games, maybe you could try the Trine games?
Also Moving Out
Unravel 2 Not on sale, unfortunately.

And was tempted to pick this one up My Singing Monsters Playground in this sale. The gameplay looks a lot like Marooners, above.

so, that's a few anyway that I can think of, quickly.
Used to play a bit of these 2-4 player, but not so much anymore.

Totally didn't know the Trine games were co-op. I feel like I have one hiding from back in the cheap bundle days... And Moving Out I think we got thru Prime or something, good to hear it's worth a look. I worry it might be too much like Overcooked for my kid though. But maybe it hits easier.

Not only is Trine co-op but it really is best played in co-op. The way the story evolves is also very co-op related.

Tools Up is also a good one - it has an untimed mode.

I played this one long back thanks to the Cozy thread via TragicBronson himself. I always felt it would be best as coop rather than solo. Cyrrently, not on sale, but frequently is.

I managed to play this solo as well, though co-op would be fun (or frustrating).

Oh, Phogs looks interesting, thanks! There's another game I saw where you're connected by a rope, but it's a 2d platformer, and this looks much more puzzley.

and
https://store.steampowered.com/app/1306720/Mayhem_Brawler/
are historical low priced if I am not mistaken and both seem fun.

I would also suggest https://store.steampowered.com/app/1135230/Ember_Knights/ that I have enjoyed with my kids and they liked Boomerang Fu also that has already been mentioned.Trine series is really great as well if you into that kind of coop gaming.

I +1 on the trine proposal !
Tricky towers is a basic in my household, even if my boyfriend is way better
ultimate chicken horse is super dumb but really funny
Use your word too
Brawlhalla is free and a good smash bros counterpart
ibb & obb is cute
heavenly bodies for some ragdoll insanity
Bread & Fred even it's a bit hard maybe
Lego games are always a good choice, it's some harmless fun
Death squared for some brain juice
It takes two of course, maybe hard for a kid
Towerfall ascenscion and nidhogg is he's not afraid of pixel art

He's surprisingly forgiving of all ages of games, and all art styles, as long as gameplay is fun.

Haven't played it myself, but Pitfall Planet has been on my radar for ages, it's extremely highly rated and very cheap.

Personally I'm a big fan of Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime too.

Chariot is also great fun.

I play a lot of couch coop with my kids. Overcooked was a bit too hard and hectic for them after the first few levels. Games I can recommend:

Bopl Battle

This is probably the best PvP local coop game I've ever played. It's so much fun with all the different abilities you can use. And for some reason it doesn't make you feel bad if you lose because a lot of stuff happening is hard to control perfectly, so even if you are a good player you will occassionally lose. And there are often ridiculous situations that make you laugh out loud even if you lose.

Boomerang Fu

A close second when it comes to PvP games. But this one can also be played as a team versus bots. Lots of fun.

Gauntlet Slayer Edition

A great coop action game that has just the right difficulty if you play it with kids. Can't remember, I think there are more hardcore difficulties you can choose from, but the regular difficulty was no problem with 8+12 year old kids. It's a relatively short game, but it has a nice atmosphere and was a lot of fun to play.

Hidden in Plain Sight

A really fun party game and also very cheap. Graphics don't look great obviously, but it's a lot of fun with multiple different game mods to choose from.

We've been playing Minecraft Dungeons, which feels like a blending of old Gauntlet, Minecraft, and Diablo. Inventory management between runs is a butt though. So maybe new Gauntlet is a good thing for us to look at. I'll have to see if Bopl battle might be a good pvp intro

Out of Order
Pile Up! Box by Box I played this with my dad who isn't super great at games, he really loved it!
Ultimate Chicken Horse

Haven't played (from my wishlist):
Mosa Lina
Bokura
Portal 2 (You mentioned this but for anyone else reading the sale is really good!)
Tricky Towers
Super Cane Magic ZERO - Legend of the Cane Cane
WHAT THE GOLF?
Surmount: A Mountain Climbing Adventure

Broforce would be my personal suggestion. Very easy to get into, good amount of characters makes for some nice variety, difficulty curve not too steep. Played it for hours back when it came out and still play it with friends every now and then. Check it out if you haven't already, it's 80% off on the couch co-op sale atm.

Maybe try some of the pinball games - https://store.steampowered.com/app/2328760/Pinball_FX/ - a lot of the tables are on discount right now

This is the one I have tried and would say is worth a shot - https://store.steampowered.com/app/442120/Pinball_FX3/ and again the tables are on sale

If you are going to get into pinball I would suggest Pinball FX... The have the same tables but pinball fx is the newer platform... The tables are not interchangeable between FX and FX3 so might as well get the tables on the newer platform. The tables are pricey but they are often on sale. I usually wait till it hits around 60-75% off. I think they are worth it with great replayability value... but only if you are into pinball.

I think you can download Pinball FX for free and they include one table, so you can try it out. Also a lot of the paid tables have trial periods to try them out before buying them.

Well it has take it in turns and has a really fun tournament modes plus if you plug in two controllers at once both can use the flippers in game and I like to play with my son this way he has one flipper and I have the other one and work together on the table - we really like the score mode to get to a score with in 60 seconds and then you keep going until you lose

Im playing
big helmet heroes and is a lot of fun, the only downside is that you MUST have two controllers or you wont be able to play.
The other one I want to try is corriden

These both look fun, but wow Coridden is shiny.
Luckily my main Steam system is Steam deck, so we just pair our odd console controllers to it. Keyboard and mouse games are more an issue for me.

The Deadly Tower of Monsters is not on sale now but you can get it for less than 3 bucks every couple of months or so on resellers.
It's very fun to play in co-op and it's made to feel like an old scifi B movie, complete with a hilarious running commentary by the "director" which got me killed many times because I was laughing too hard to notice enemies coming my way.

On sale I'd recommend the Lego Star Wars Skywalker Saga. It's 80% off and you get a good 30 hours of gameplay. Lots of DLC but they are characters packs, from recent shows so you can just pick the Mandalorian up for 2 bucks if you really want to. I've seen this one for 8.50 on Fanatical this month though.
Beyond: Two Souls is also great in co-op and it's 75% off but I have seen it for less than 5 bucks elsewhere in recent months so it might be worth checking resellers instead.

...where in the world did I get Deadly Tower of Monsters? I appear to own that. What a lovely name for a game. Very cheap 'purchase' for me I guess! :D

We've played some Lego games. They never quite catch me like other games somehow. We got a good way through Star Wars ...uh... Something on the Wii anyway. And some time into Avengers I think, which seemed more fun.

Had a few recommendations to me for Beyond: Two Souls. Maybe I'll splurge on it as a summer game we can play together. Might be too dark for another few years though.

Hah, I reached the end! Lots of fantastic suggestions here.

We're also playing Streets of Rogue, which has a bit of an old school Rogue feeling, but also a bit of a 'destroy everything' and gritty streets feeling from Streets of Rage. It's surprisingly thorough in letting you play different ways: blow everything up, bribe people, stealth, etc. Allows 1-4p co-op.
