I just logged on to steam today and to see half my games are yellow and say requires update. I cant believe that ever dev decided to update their games today, as some of these games are really old (like the orginal xcom)

so what gives? why so many updates at once?

Perhaps something's wrong with your Steam. Or you didn't launch it for multiple decades.

a lot of games were recently transferred to the new file format by valve, perhaps this is the cause of a lot of it. My xcom updated recently as well as a bunch of games I hadn't touched/haven't been touched in forever.

I always thought steamgifts and its sister websites use a custom-made forum software.

Well it is a custom built script but it also uses the markdown syntax for posting.
However some parts like posting an image are disabled.
The link i posted is a good site to learn it, it is pretty easy.

Happend to me when Steam support told me to change my account's language to English. It downloaded language packs and I wasn't able to stop it. I hope you have a good internet connection :/

Its just a bug try to delete everything on your steam folder except Steam.exe file and steamapps folder and then start Steam.exe let it update itself (this might take a while). Well, that should solve your problem actually this method solves lots of problems. Also I've had that problem once with my Half-Life games every single one of them wanted to update itself even though I didnt install any of them and when i try to stop/delete those games they just pop up after a restart. Anyway like i said that should solve your problem

This could happen if you change the language in Steam. Have you looked in the downloads tab how much Steam wants you to download? Let one download start and look how much you need to download. You can also try to verifify the game files.
