I have proposition to discussion:
Not always it is clear for everyone if something can be put or not as giveaway. There is a some time when someone can put it as giveaway (untill it will be officially forbidden). Why not change such games into 0 points and give possibility to finish such giveaways (of course no new giveaway of such type). No one will profit from this, only some winner who did not obtained this game yet.

What do you think?

I write it as I made a mistake again:
I dont want to do something wrong (I even asked some time ago how to check if game is free or not). I got a key (I was not sure if it treated as free or not). I waited some hours to check and after I saw it is in database I created giveaway (longer time giveaway to be sure that this case will be clear before someone will win). It looks like I waited to short. Some time after my giveaway it was catalogued as free and was deleted. I am sorry that second time made a mistake, but it was not in purpose. In future I will wait around 2 days before checking

You don't have to give it away through the giveaway function.

Yes, but I think that my proposition would be better. Not every giveaway of free game is done in purpose. And if it is changed on o points no one will profit and someone can win it anyway.

I am talking only about this short time before it is officially removed from database. But personaly I will do everything not to make mistake ever again. I need to giveaway something to repair reputation soon.

Personally I agree that there should be giveaways for games that were given for free for a limited time. Let it be with zero points.
The reason is not everyone managed to get it for free and may still want to win it. Also some might have not known it was free and bought it at some time later to give it to some people or got through a bundle.
And no I will not give it just like that because many people will want it, and I do not feel comfortable choosing the people, I want them to be chosen by random like in the giveaways.

Yes but with free giveaways you must accept that site will be unavailable, most case very slow like always when mass giveaways are made and many people want to entry them. You can use random.org for choosing

Personally for me it is really slow and buggy. I live at the moment at a house with internet where I download a game of 30GB in 10 to 20 minutes. And the site to load or to let me enter a giveaway takes most of the times over a minute. Since they changed to their new site for me it is only getting slower and buggier. And yes maybe I could use the site you suggest but I will not use other sites for what this site should do. Also when was Euro Truck Simulator 2 given free and I can not make a giveaway of it?

Mainly if you get a game through some massive giveaway, you shouldn't make a GA for it, because it will be added to the list. Hope this help:)

isn't easier/simpler to enforce the rule rather than make people not break it by modifying it?

Personally, I think the fact that we see threads popping up on SG for people to give away free keys, coupons, non-Steam games, etc., means that SG would ideally handle these situations properly. Are there challenges to allowing free games to be given away on SG? Yes, but that's just a challenge waiting for a creative solution, not a reason not to solve the problem. There are lots of ways to address these challenges, and I'm not familiar enough with the inner workings of the site to know which are feasible, or which would be best, but I do agree that these deficiencies should be resolved.

One possibility for free games that I haven't heard before would be to put a limit on the number of copies of each game that can be given away each day across the site (not sure what the right number would be - maybe 200, with large dev GAs requiring special permission). That way there's a steady trickle of these keys over time for people that didn't get it when it was free, and you just have to wait for a chance to give your key away. Like I said though, there's probably a lot I don't know.
