Can't believe I was about to buy RPG Maker VX Ace from the Steam weekend sale, good thing I saw this on time

VX Ace for a dollar? :D
I'll try to get the $6 next pay day though. I'd get the $12 if I thought I could push it, but $6 at least will have much of the content.

bought both DS resource packs, and the old school modern resource pack
.. and alot of the music packs(I really shouldn't have, but w/e)
considered some of the futuristic stuff.. but if I make an RPG it will be more fantasy than sci-fi(if not all fantasy)

right now they are 75% on steam also so if you have it you might get it now

Soooo... RPG Maker? It's basically a complete framework with all the resources already provided for making those top-down pixelated RPG games that seem to be popping up all over the place, right? Or can it be used in more varied ways?
I'm asking because... well, I wanna make games and all- that's why I study programming- but I don't exactly have a story idea of my own and according to RPG Maker's trailer "no programming required" so they cut my job for me.

It works like most SDKs. You can do basic stuff without any coding, but if you want to create something really great and unique you need to learn the scripting language. Any good RPG Maker game requires programming, there is no way around that.
EDIT: And it's a SDK to make top-down RPGs. You can't make a 1st person shooter or a space sim with it. And if you don't have a story you want to tell then you're probably better off trying to code a puzzle game or something similar that doesn't necessarily need any story or dialogue.

I guess I'll think about it over the week. While I can try to reverse engineer their code for better stuff (since I know reading others' code is hell and I need to learn not to hate it) there is the fact that I have no idea for a story to make a game around (and I normally value a game's gameplay a lot over it's story).

I've seen a adventure horror game made with it, and even though the PSP remake was better, the original is still great.
I've also seen a remake of The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening.

That sounds awesome, I did some searching and apparently that LoZ remake is only a demo though, is it still being worked on?

Considering getting this since it would be really fun to mess around trying to put a small game together....anyone who has any idea which tier would be the best? Is the 1 dollar one fine, or is the 6 dollar one quite decent? How great is the 12 dollar one?
Secondly I'm curious how hard it was to make something like "To The Moon", if that would take coding or is a game like that simple to make?

Well it depends, if you use everything thats built-in as is, then you dont need to know any coding at all, also ruby is easy to learn. If you only want to make an rpg with a good story and with the standard battle system (1st person(?)) then go ahead and buy it. DLC are only good for you if you dont know how to make music, or if you suck at making "pixelart".

Ruby? Is that some type of coding? Sorry for the many questions, I'm just not that much into it, all I've done is HTML/CSS/PHP/MYSQL coding so I can't say I'd know much about the technical stuff. I'd probably make a story RPG with no combat. As for the DLC "don't know how to make music or if you suck at making pixelart." Wouldn't have a clue, is it nice value for just messing around seeing if I can make a cute little game in my spare time or is it just if you want it to be absolutely perfect? Thanks for your answers already :)

Yep, ruby is a coding language, just like c++, heres a tutorial for it: http://www.codecademy.com/tracks/ruby check it out, its easy to understand. You can make a game without the dlc's, but you will have more stuff with dlc's. (more music, sound effects, tilesets, characters, etc.)

At the very least, you should have fun playing with one of these programs for a few hours. Set a simple goal for what you think you could finish in a day or two and put in as much effort as you can. It gives a big confidence boost when you see how much you got done in a day, even if it comes out to be very simple and the program does most of the hard work for you.
When GameMaker Studio was given out for free, I spent about two weeks making a silly rhythm game and it turned out to be something I could actually enjoy playing for a few minutes. The important thing is I learned something valuable from it.

You can also try RPG Maker for free this weekend. So if you're on the fence if it's for you, or possibly Axis from BundleStar or Clickteam Fusion (was also on Humble and free weekend) or GameMaker Studio, then this is your chance to test it out before a $1 purchase.
I recommend going for $12 though for #370, it's already 95% off. And VX Ace is $70 alone, so already 80% off the base program.

Excellent point. It's rare that these creation tools give trials with full access so take advantage while it's available.

Not that it matters much, but someone here gave my game a 1. Without even playing it probs. Link removed.
Not sure why someone felt the need to ruin my example, but there you go. Jerk.

yea I got my copy in November so I kinda feel a lil pouty too but still am stoked on this only one DLC package was one I had in the bundle so =)

I know of a few on Steam that were made in RPG Maker XP, maybe the most popular one is To The Moon. This one was made with Ace and was greenlit already, maybe there are others. And I'm pretty sure there is more outside of Steam.
The problem is, RPG Maker is very easy to use. At least if all you want is a basic RPG with no scripted sequences, custom features or custom graphics. And that inevitably leads to a huge pile of trash 'games' that get released (for free) or that people try to put on greenlight. So while it is very possible to create a successful commercial title with the RPG Maker it is probably harder than creating a game from scratch. In a way.

A question about Humble bundle.
I am thinking in buying the bundle to a friend, but I dont have enough money to buy two 6$ tiers and the bundle ends in 6 hours. I know that I can buy a 1$ tier and later paid more money to get the 6$ tier, but can I do that if the bundle ended? Or only if the bundle is active?
Thanks, and sorry if I have gramatical errors.

The bundle ends in six days and twenty one hours.

It's fine, I got a bit confused too. Anyways, I don't think you can do so once the bundle has ended.
Edit: Actually, please refer to what I said down below. You can up to 30 days once the bundle has ended.

"If you have already purchased a bundle, you can add to your original amount during the bundle sale period (and up to 30 days after the bundle ends). Just go to your personal download page and there will be a link that says "Like what we're doing? Increase your order amount". Unfortunately, this is not available for gift keys, in case people want to keep their gift amount private." according to their support page.

oh one thing that is neat is that the cards the game has come with tips on common problems you can have they have urls on the description and such to forum pages it is one of the more useful card sets in that respect

So VX Ace is newer, right? Why would you use XP? And why is it higher tier?

Oops, you are right. I must have read over that post.
