Yeah, but didn't he leave to work on the Rift? Sounds like a decent trade-off to me.

I think there is only one called "Rift", the MMORPG. it's well rated afaik

To be honest its not like they've been releasing good games recently anyway. Quake 4 = meh, Rage = pretty poor, Wolfenstein = meh, Doom 3 HD!!! (because thats what we need!) = meh. They were good back in the day, now theyre not shining so bright

its was okay for me but nothing great at all.
Tons of bugs on launch (expected better from what was a solid company), crap pc port (Id started on PC after all), Regenerating health, Way too short, pointless mini-games with no incentive to play them, far too much going backwards and forth over the same areas, pretty small map, felt like a borderlands wannabe, overall a forgettable, dull experience here.
I just expected more from the creators of the fantastic doom and quake. I felt it had potential it never reached.
I can still happily play the older Id games, probably partly nostalgia but they are also still a ton of fun and games like those are rare today, yet I have zero incentive to go back and play rage. Now every game treats us like we're idiots and has to explain everything to us and hold our hands throughout the game.

So, you're saying the game had good mechanics and visuals, but it lacked depth, meaning, and a compelling narrative?
Why does that sound familiar?

Both Quake 4 and Wolfenstein were made by Raven Software, also they are quite good games while having some flaws.

Well they pretty much dominated PC gaming in the nineties, as they were not only pushing the boundaries with their own games, but provided the engine for a fair share of other titles. And let's not forget they were offering tools for user created content and releasing for linux as well. And disclosing the sources to their engines. Where would Valve and Steam be now if it weren't the clone of Quake source that became the Source engine for Half Life.
The last decade they struggled with the ever growing development cycles for AAA games and the fact that almost everyone forgets about the smaller games they did, like Doom RPG, Orcs & Elves (yeah, technicaly Fountainhead instead of id but come on) and Mutant Bash TV for mobiles. And that damned vicious circle of pushing into consoles and PC.
Quake Live came out while browser gaming still meant either flash games or pretty spread sheats. Now they are retreating back to standalone clients, but in my eyes that is still the way to go, as the browser based client didn't allow for the customization that was a driving factor in Quake gaming ever since.
The next time you open a developer console in any game, remember that this is just one of many industry standards that were set by id Software.

Yep. So they now go from mediocre to ... well, they'll just stay at mediocre.

Carmack's Twitter:
"If they don't want me to talk on stage at Quakecon next year, we'll just have to fill up the lobby like the old days. :-)"

It wouldn't be news if he had left id Software months ago. Keep in mind, he dedicated quite a bit of his time running Armadillo Aerospace while still being CTO and active part of id for years. And he did lots of hardware related stuff there as well. Plus he wrote driver code for different graphics cards manufacturers when the market of 3D graphics bloomed. Bottom line is he always did several jobs at once, but kept calling id Software his home. This split is different now.
And Oculus may have released developer hardware, but I would still call them a kickstarter hype. You are comparing a startup to a company with a track record of id. Also, people seem to forget that VR gear existed 20 years ago, it is not as innovative as they make it sound like. And the time they put out consumer grade hardware they won't be alone either.

That's just evolution, not revolution, and not innovating anything at all. 20 years ago we were playing 3D at 320x200 pixels while monitors could get to double that size. And now compare that to the current OR resolution. What was considered a powerhouse rig back in the days gets dwarfed by todays smartphones. And cheaper of course, that's the point of Moore's law, devices get smaller, cheaper, more powerfull and consume less power. The components might have gotten much better by now, but the pioneering and fundamental research and innovations happened decades ago.
The whole story smells like the "look, we can build electric cars now" and everyone goes "woah", ignoring that we had electric vehicles a century ago.

ID dead when John Romero left...After that games from ID wasn't that "BIG" as wolf 3d / doom I / quake I something got broken in company so when i saw today news about Carmack left id i wasn't surprised at all.I think moves that was made years back about Tom Hall and John Romero simply gather through last years and today they blows.

The news at IGN
So sad, another nail to a legendary studio's coffin. Not the best sign for upcoming titles.
Let's hope he'll still be doing keynote speeches at QuakeCon ;)
