I didn't find a really good answer on Google and I don't know which one people prefer. That's why I made this poll.

HL or HL: Source?

View Results
Half-Life
Half-Life: Source

HL:S is the old HL running on the source engine but with the old models and textures, the only things that look better are the water and lighting.

HL source has some graphical improvements but it doesn't support mods.
I'd say go with HL1 all the way, it has some fantastic mods, and if you want HL1 with better graphics just download Black Mesa mod.

I might download that mod, as bad graphics make me feel sick for some reason :S Thanks!

I just downloaded Black Mesa again since I couldn't find the original download on my computer. My suggestion is to download it through Desura. All other mirrors the official site sends you to don't seem to work.

I have played HL:source, and found it too difficult to finish. I will have to try the original when I complete HL2

Half-Life: Source and Half-Life have the same content, so Half-Life will be just as hard...

It should be the exact same content, but after completing HL2 and being unable to complete HL:S because of lack of health compared to the damage I was taking i have my doubts about how equal they are.

Half Life is the original game. Half Life Source is still the original but use the Source engine basically for the physics and water, and lightly improved graphic.
If you really want to discover the original Half life, go for this fan made mode : http://www.blackmesasource.com/ . It's not complete (it's missing the last part, and this part is not the best anyway) but it was improved on source engine. Really enjoyed to play this one.

i found the gameplay very different from the original, specially enemy accuracy. it was nice to see the game in a newer engine, but personally i prefer the old one.

Enemy accuracy was dumbed down on BM?

no, the opposite. enemies always found a way to hit me, even if i was behind cover and far away from them.

I could agree about other points, but graphics "not that much better"? http://i.imgur.com/riFR6.jpg ? http://playingdaily.pl/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/half-life-black-mesa.jpg ?

Well if you're looking for one or the other, I'd say the original all the way. Honestly, I've never played Source, but I've beaten the original numerous times and the mods are fun. Good to have options.

HL does autosave once in a while. HL:S does not. Learned that the hard way.

I'm kind of lost here... I voted HLS because of the improved physics and water effects, but people are talking about a Black Mesa mod for HL1, so which one has the superior graphical experience?

  • HL1 with Black Mesa mod?
  • HLS with its improved physics and look of the water?

PS: I'm even more confused... I see a Black Mesa Reborn Mod here, it looks awesome but I don't know how good it actually is.

Black Mesa mod is not for HL1. It's basically a semi-complete (missing Xen yet) game (or mod if wish) on Source engine with completely reworked levels, models and textures, but following the general HL1 storyline and level design.
As to me (though haven't played HL:S yet) it's very good, waiting to see, if Xen levels are finally released.

So it's a rebuild from the ground up of the game then, my bad for nor reading I guess:
"The first of two releases of Black Mesa is currently available free for download. This release includes over 8 hours and 14 chapters of gameplay. The final release, via steam, is under development."

AFAIK it is.
I'm still hoping that "final release" is happening at some point (valve time in action even with valve-related projects).

afaik Half Life source is pretty much a broken mess, full of glitches and game-breaking bugs

This is some useful info, I was wondering why I was having so many issues as I got farther, even with godmode xen was difficult and unfinishable (final boss would not die)
