just found out company of heroes is having a stree test beta event, imma get in on that, hope it last a little while

Its not free but, Starcraft 2 gets my vote, also I LOVE the total war series especially shogun 2, goes on sale pretty cheap amazing game.

BattleForge is a free-to-play RTS-TCG in which you assemble a "deck" of up to 20 "cards" consisting of RTS units, buildings, and spells. The cash shop angle comes in via the currency used to buy additional cards being essentially ungrindable - a single point awarded for playing each day. That's enough to pick up some commons via trade, but acquiring more valuable cards requires a lot of time spent trading or some outlay of cash. I played the marketplace to gather several hundred dollars' worth of cards (without spending any cash) before EA devaluated the currency to give new buyers a lot more virtual goods for their money. Now it's cheap to acquire a reasonable collection of cards.

Players' biggest issue is that there's no real ongoing development. There have been no new PvE maps in years; only a handful of lazily-implemented new cards, occasional balance changes, and some community-made PvP maps.

I would suggest trying out Starcraft 2, it has a free-to-play version that lets you play one of the races and gives you a couple of maps to try out.

The new Command & Conquer will be free to play and you can sign up for beta access, though I'm not sure when it's coming out.

You can get Ground Control for free, but just the base game - version on GOG includes the expansion.

Go on Desura. There are about a hundred free games there, some are RTSs.

Command and Conquer maybe? The first three games and their addons are free. Tiberian Sun is still a good game even today if you can look past the voxels.

Delete the "hook me up with something in a giveaway" part, this site has 0 tolerance for beggars. As for the game everyone pretty much said everything i could think of. Really depends on what kind of RTS you are looking for, pick your share from the comments really :)

Starcraft II Starter? It's addictive, if you enjoy it, you can upgrade to full version.

Look up Spring RTS. Balanced Annihilation. It's FREE and FUN.

Company of Heroes, first one, Company of Heroes 2 doesn't seem to hit me, Dawn of War is also nice, first one as well, not the second
