This question goes to the people here living in the USA:

During my current visit to the US I realized that it is really hard to purchase PC games in the US. I have been to several Malls, Wallmart, GameStop's and even an Best Buy. In all of these I either don't find any PC games or just a handful.

So where do you actually purchase boxed games without ordering them online or buying them digitally? I just can't imagine that it is so hard to find games in normal retail stores. In other countries you sometimes get flooded with PC games in electronic stores selling entertainment media.

Digital distribution has become so popular and successful that the option of wasting money to create physical discs, instruction manuals, boxes etc. has become almost obsolete.

Well in 2010 only 29% of pc game sales were digital. A big number, but still a minority.

With the new functionality changes to steam, and origins, as well as the HUGE load of games coming end year '11. I assume that will rise quite a bit. We are entering a new age of digital purchasing by far.

Hmm. We've got a Hastings Entertainment here, they have a decent selection of PC games. Gamestop here is the same as yours, low selection. I was lucky to find a copy of the Witcher 2 there the other day.

May I ask why you can't buy from an online retailer? No credit card or something? I'm not sure about this, but you may be able to use one of those prepaid credit cards you can buy at grocery stores.

Normally I bought my games on Steam lately, but the country I come from has some hard restrictions toward certain games. Meaning I can't buy everything online or in a local store where I live. I was wanting to use the opportunity during my visit to buy games that I normally would not get.

yes, and when we germans gift a game, you might end up with a censored/cut version. for example, the german version of titan quest locks to german voice+text language, while you can choose languages in every other european version.
thus, we should only give away games that aren't subject to censorship, or are imported from somewhere else, like my UK copies of prey.

Steam... Oh wait at a brick and mortar store? ummm bought L4D2 at gamestop on release day. Saw it was $20 less on steam like a week later and never bought games from brick and mortar stores since.

It may have been a problem in the city you visited. The US is a massive place, what you see in one city or even state does not reflect the rest of the country. Locally, my best buy has 2 aisles of PC games, and my Gamestops all have at least 2 display cases dedicated to PC games. The cost is still ridiculous though when compared to Steam and GOG.

Ah yes, Best Buy I forgot. They're pretty good selection wise. And I hear they have FO New Vegas for 9.99 right now.

I did finally find some stores with games. After a long and disappointing journey through Best Buys, Targets and Walmarts (all of these had games, but not what I was actually looking for) I asked my way through several Gamestops until I finally found one that carried more than 250 games. Of course I found some games for my collection. =)

One thing I have learned though is that Online sale is much stronger in the US then in other countries.

Where I live unless you are getting console games, you pretty much have to go online. (live almost in direct center of USA)

There's not really a point in buying anything in a hard copy, like most people said. And I have to say, I have found some games in Walmarts, Targets, etc. Wasn't really that hard to find for me.

As I mentioned before, I did manage to find games at Walmart, Target, etc. I just wasen't pleased with the little variety of games they had to offer compared to PS3, XBox, etc. games. For myself I like to own hard copys of games, simply for the reason that I like putting them in a shelf.

Maybe I'm just spoiled of the german electronic stores that litarally cary hundreds and hundreds of games for the PC, old and new ones. I guess that is just the reason I was suprised, barely able to find games during my vacation in the US. =)

Yeah, of you don't want one of the 10 games available at most places then you better either get steam or get a console.
