Don't waste your gems on Auctions.People are gonna bid more than the items worth. I believe you can trade for a copy of CS:GO for cheap. I'm sure it will get a good price during winter sale too.

Those amounts of gems some people bid on some games are worth more than the game itself. They would gain more money for selling the cards on the marketplace than exchanging them for gems... Don't know ... just a strange event. x)

Spend gems on boosters, sell those boosters or unpack and sell cards, buy game when on sale! Assuming the game you want will have a large enough sale (75%) and you'll be able to acquire enough funds from selling boosters. Odds are CSGO will be at least 75% off right? Not hard to get 4$ from boosters, assuming you have enough boosters to pick from, and they actually sell for something. I made about 3$ from only 3 boosters so far, well also including buying 1 card and reselling it for 30cents higher.

First go to some auction, bid 1 gem and then you cancel your bid. This way, you will get a badge. :P

But, really: go to your "Badges" screen, there is a "Booster Pack Creator" near the top right. There you can exchange gems for "Booster Packs" (that is, packets with 3 game cards) for the games you own (each game only once a day). You can then use the cards to craft badges, or just sell them in the marketplace.

Hmm, most of the boosters cost 1000 gems which is about 80 eurocents. I don't think there is a booster worth that much.

Sakura spirit booster sells for about 1$, costs 750 games. There are a few others where the cards sell for about 30cents each.

Sorry, but, stupid idea... Booster packs are like $0.35 worth. They cost from 667 gems to who knows how much. My idea was simply sell all my backgrounds and my emoticons for $0.10 each one. Until now, I earned $1.4 aprox. If I decided to recycle all that stuff into gems and then spend the gems in booster packs, I would have earned something like $0.8. Believe me, selling everything including bgs and emoticons it's just a better idea. Of course, your idea is better when you have games like Sakura's spirits or whatsoever in your library, which I don't own...

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I agree that, at this point, it is not profitable to turn stuff into gems anymore. But for those who already HAVE gems, I suspect booster packs is the way to go now (instead of auctions).

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Nope. I bought 13200 gems last night for ~6 € (64 emoticons for 0,03 € + 101 emoticons for 0,04 €).

Example: if a booster pack costs 1000 gems, I should sell it at no less than 0,45 € just to get my money back. You know how much I can get for these packs right now? 0,21 - 0,30 €. They're all like this, the 1200-gem booster packs (for which I need a price of 0,54 €), the 857-gem packs (which I can't sell until they hit 0,39 €), etc, etc. They're just not worth crafting and selling right now.

I like my odds on some of those bids though.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Stupid idea? No, you just dont have certain boosters which you mentioned later on in your post. I really dont understand how you not having certain boosters means its a stupid idea? Not to mention A LOT of people already converted their items into gems day 1. They then got a refund after the gem debacle and now only have gems.

Lemme quote: "Of course, your idea is better when you have games like Sakura's spirits or whatsoever in your library, which I don't own...". Maybe the word "stupid" was a bit agressive, but as I said, it's only profitable for those who have those "certain boosters".

Everything in the market is going to increase in price because people are stupid and don't realize what Steam is doing. Converting things into worthless Gems decreases the stock of items on the market therefore making those items more expensive. gg volvo gg

Comment has been collapsed.

That's a good thing for people with a backlog of stuff that previously nobody would have bought from them.

Steam stuff had devalued to the point that some of it was worth a fraction of a cent, (but it's impossible to list at that price)

I don't understand the motives of the people who are converting to gems, but for the rest of us it reduces supply and increases demand for items that, recently, were so worthless many people didn't bother listing them at all.

I don't understand the motives of the people who are converting to gems

I'm able to create gems from low-cost items, then use those gems to create higher-cost booster packs, and I end up ahead. I've made a couple bucks playing the margins like this so far.

They decreased...0.26€, it was 0.53€ before(idk why you say they increased...), all cards are decreasing because ppl buy booster packs, the worst decrease is for f2p games, where ppl could get booster packs, where cards used to cost a lot, over 1€, but now decreased more than 5 times in price just because demand for them is very low. What increases is emoticons and backgrounds, not cards.

Maybe you just mistook the words of decrease and increase, but here is an example:
Maeko

The only more profitable booster pack to me than selling the 1000 gems pack was the Sakura Spirit one.

for each game to bid there is 100 copies, this means 100 top bidders for each game will get a badge? I mean, winning gives you an additional different badge(not the badge just for bid) or just the game?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

No. Only the highest bidder gets the game and the badge. Later on there will be a new auction every 45 minutes or so. That's why it's 100 copies. Winning gives you a badge but I haven't found information whether it's a separate badge or just an upgraded one.

I think that after 15th there will be auction every 45 minutes, and the top bidder wins that game and will be removed from the top of list of bidders and the second one will be the top bidder, after 45 minutes if the new top bidder remains at the same position he will receive the game and so on...I know for sure that if you are among the #100 top bidders it shows your position, for example on some of my bids it shows that I'm number 50 or 75 ...

No, the best thing to do is selling backgrounds and stuff on the market, second best option selling sacks of gems on the market, 3rd option crafting booster packs and the last option bidding on a game, total waste of money.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

That is not entirely accurate.

For most games, creating a booster pack from gems ends up losing you money, but for some games you are able to make money creating booster packs out of gems. It just takes some effort to find those games.

They need to have a higher number of cards per set, so the cost to craft a booster is low.
They need to be relatively obscure, and ideally never bundled before.
And most of the valuable ones tend to be anime-styled, because those weeb NEETs with their sweaty disposable income.

But even then you're limited to crafting one booster pack per game per day, so it's not like you can fill the margins entirely by yourself and make ten dollars and move onto another game; you're looking at making something like 20c a day, and only until enough other people end up finding the game and pushing you out of the market.

Only on Steam ppl pay much more than the value of something to get it for "free". A normal 50% off for Borderlands Pre-Sequel for example is nothing, not a lot of ppl would buy it, but if it's "free" with the cost of tons of cheap destroyed emoticons and backgrounds, then ppl get it even if they gonna pay twice (considering they have still 2 days to increase even more their bids)

1) There are still tons of exploited gems around that won't be deleted.

2) I'm beginning to think more people care about the 'Win a bid' badge more than winning the actual game.

Wait.. Wait.. Lol.. Are there people who actually bid in this? I turn all my gems into booster packs lol..
I placed a bid to get the badge and then cancelled it.
I mean seriously.. Nearly 1mil gems for something that will be gone within a month.. Stupid.
Let's assume the best case scenario: All gotten from emoticons that cost $0.03
CS:GO goes for 105500 gems = 1055 emoticons * 0.03 = $31.65
While in reality CS:GO goes for $14.99 and in the sale it would probably go for lower.
Selling these emoticons for $0.03($0.01 to wallet) would give the person $10.55 in worst case because most emoticon and background prices went up, especially those that give 100 gems.

So, if someone bids 100000 gems, there's someone who bid 99000, 98000, 97000...

I guess that means unless you're like level 300+ with bazillion of Steam Sales emoticons, you should just booster/sell your gems.

It might mean that 100 people bade e.g. 1-10 gems, the 101st guy 999 gems and the 102nd dude 1000 gems and you will see 1000 gems as the highest bid. But I wonder if you can outbid someone by 1 gem or is it necessary to bid like 1% more than the current highest bid. Anyway, you won't win anything unless you want to overpay.

Actually the longest running auction is the last one as all bids carry over from one aution to the next. so the last one is 99 x 45 min. longer than the first one and not the shortest one! only difference: the 99 highest bidders of the previous auctions are gone ( which not automatically means the the last auction has the lowest price at the end).

Those power players that are well versed with the steam market mechanics and trading etc will always end up winning or be at the top. Not that there is anything wrong though, you should be rewarded if you know how to optimize something to your advantage so long as it is legitimate.

Just curious ... where do those bags of gems on market come from? around 0.48 EUR (currently) may or may be not better than destroying the same amount in items - esepecially as there's no way to how many gems an items gives until you have it your inventory... or is there?
In any case I rather like the whole idea with gems ... finally a way to get rid of useless emoticons and backgrounds. The auction itself is ridiculous though.
