I'm a filmmaker myself, and I really enjoy watching short films. Here's an amazing animation short film I just saw:

Animation: Night Light

Does anyone have a specific favourite short film? If you have several, list them all! :)

Not my absolute favorite, but it's new and very well done!

NSFW. But very well animated...

EDIT: Yeah, it's quite...serious; I just finished the dystopia unit in school, so it makes a lotta sense to me.

Tough question, honestly. Don't know if it's the right way to put it, but I'm a fan of reflective movies that aren't afraid to take the "slow pacing and creative imagery" route (considered boring by some).

I'm also a sucker for "what if" movies (Horror, Sci Fi, Drama, Thriller, Animation... doesn't matter).

This doesn't mean that I don't like action, but a few example of what I'm talking about would be:

Moon (2009)

Into the Wild (2007)

127 Hours (2010)

The Man from Earth (2007)

Cast Away (2000)

Pandorum (2009)

John Carpenter's "The Thing" (1982)

Satoshi Kon's "Paprika"

Howl's Moving Castle (2004)

Mary and Max (2009)

Memoirs of a Geisha (2005)

Apocalypto (2006)

The list goes on, but I think I went far enough :)

I hope I made myself clear. [Unfortunately, I'm not good at being synthetic :( ]

If you like reflective movies and you don't mind the slow pace you really ought to check these directors out(movies to start with in brackets):

  1. Béla Tarr(Werckmeister Harmonies, The Turin Horse and Satango if you have 7h hours of free time)
  2. Andrei Tarkovsky(The Mirror, Stalker, Andrei Rublov)
  3. Krzysztof Kieślowski(Three Colours Trilogy, The Double Life of Veronique and The Decalogue miniseries)
  4. Ingmar Bergman(if you're looking for reflective movies that would be a great start; really hard to type only 3 movies to start with; I started with The Seventh Seal, then watched Autumn Sonata and Persona, if I remember correctly; anyway you can start with 5-hours-long epic Fanny and Alexander or watch his easiest to understand movie - Wild Strawberries)
  5. Carl Theodor Dreyer(if you call yourself a movie fan you HAVE TO watch The Passion of Joan d'Arc; also: The Word and The Day of Wrath)
  6. Theodoros Angelopoulos(difficult to recommend the titles to start with; I started with Ulysse's Gaze, then watched Landscape in the Mist; another masterpieces: The Suspended Step of the Stork and - my favourite and very underrated - Eternity and a Day)
  7. Andrei Zwiagincew(he only released 3 full-length movies, so yeah... all of them)
  8. Darren Aronofsky(Black Swan, The Fountain and...Pi as I am sure you've seen Requiem for a Dream)
  9. Ridley Scott(you may think that he doesn't belong here but Blade Runner is an amazing movie - the atmosphere and visuals are breathtaking, you should also try Gladiator - typical Hollywood epic, but hella good one, if you're keen on crusaders and medieval movies you should watch Kingdom of Heaven)

Now for invidual movies(original titles here, but it won't be hard to find it - I'll add the year for sure):
Bal (2010),
Witness for the Prosecution (1957),
Seppuku (1962),
Las (2009),
Sunset Limited (2011),
The Dollar Trilogy by Sergio Leone(ought to watch his other movies, haven't seen them, though),
Ballada o soldate (1959),
Pisma myortvogo cheloveka (1986),
Okuribito (2008),
Espíritu de la colmena (1973) - you can also watch Cria cuervos,
Leggenda del pianista sull'oceano (1998),
Biruma no tategoto (1956),
12 Angry Men (1957),
The Road (2009),
Oldboy (2003),
American History X (1998),
Elephant Man (1980),
Donnie Darko (2001),
Call of Cthulhu (2005),
Pay It Forward (2000),
Platoon (1986),
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (1975),
Hachiko: A Dog's Story (2009),
Gran Torino (2008),
Shutter Island (2010),
Shawshank Redemption (1994),
So weit die Füße tragen (2001),
Lethal Weapon Quadrilogy(I hope that's how you spell this),

Enjoy!

I was surprised at how this movie, set almost entirely in one living room, managed to suck me in. No bangs, no booms and no 3D glasses; just a clever script (imo).

Ever heard of the animation school Gobelins? They make some kick-ass shorts. I could spend an entire day watching them.

Trois Petits Points
Smoke My Christmas
Jean Luc

Here are also some shorts commissioned by AIDES (French made world-wide campaign against AIDS) that are strictly made for mature audiences. There are others but they're hidden deep within their website.

Smutley
Fingers (I could've spared you from this one)
Sugar Baby Love
Bathroom Grafitti

And here are some others (These are not french, I promise.) that are quite generic and some being utterly disturbing.

Office Black Hole
Meow

POKOPOKOPIKOTAN
Cat Soup (Short Movie)

"The External World" was hilarious, with a sprinkle of satire. I have a feeling I missed a serious message somewhere, but I was too overtaken by the randomness :).

"Please Say Something" was unexpectedly nice after a few minutes of plot development (the parts I could figure out, at least). Some transitions were also very creative.

I like your taste

I was fascinated by the style (and overall integrity) of this one when I first saw it: 'Gates of Heaven'.

I also very much liked 'The Periwig Maker' (Annette and Steffen Schaffer).
Such craftsmanship, too. How they combine puppetry and candle flame in a single frame, ah.

And then there's 'The Fall' by Aurel Klimt.
(Oh, that heart-rending finale.)

'The Monk and the Fish' has got something natural about it. And... well, it's got humour, too.

I guess I shouldn't be bothering to mention the stellar 'The Hedgehog in the Fog', should I? )

I like the style of *Gates of Heaven.

As for The Periwig Maker, I didn't quite get it, but it's still very well done.

I was extremely creeped out by the scene at 6:37 of The Fall.

Finally, The Monk and the Fish inspired me to make something in Minecraft.

Two of my favorites were the short, The German and the CG short, Oracle. I loved the storytelling of these two. I also used to make CG design and concept animations, mostly for fun. Here is the latest, the Anshara™ Concept CG Animation. Maybe its not a professional CG concept animation, but I hope you'll like it. I made this for the fans of my epic fantasy book franchise, so they may see one of the world's flying crafts in its true shape.
