They can claim your account by your purchased history with the "i forgot my password" option.
"i should have known better that support doesn't communicate via direct messages"
or that they use discord :D

ah of course, didn't think of that. i thought credit card information because he sent me a screenshot as example and some digits after the credit card were blacked out.
thanks for telling me what they were up to.

Almost fell for this today. My thanks to any of you who contributed on this thread in shedding light over a type of scam I wasn't familiar with in its current form. I guess paranoia is the only solution after all...

Since threads like these are being created every other day, maybe it would be more useful if a mod could make a sticky thread summarizing all these steam scams, including sample screenshots etc, like a PSA
Some of the more technical tricks they do, like the fake iframe one, can catch lots of people off guard

Thanks for the info!
Man, so much scammer around there. Yesterday someone also tried to scam me by sending me a message (it came from a user out of my friendslist which might have been "hacked"), if I could visit a specific website and vote for his CS:GO team.
Of course I did my research before visiting this site ...
Also the same with these fake giveaways ...
You have to be really careful these days :(

On one of my screenshots there is a "slightly" suspicious message that sounds like the setup for a scam in OP. AFAIK there is no invite or comment limit - also what comment limit, if they leave a comment? Also, not surprisingly, the account has their games hidden, and there's 10 hours of dota2 and 0.1 hours of TF2 in the last ~2 months.
...Hey please add me I've reached the weekly invite and comment limit (that's why I'm commenting on the screenshot) cause I have a big problem and this is about on your steam account please add me so that we can have a privacy I'm waiting on your response

Hey guys :)
a few minutes ago, a dude messaged me and told me, that he reported my account by accident for illegal actions on steam.
he told me, that i should convince a steam support member not to ban me. therefore i should add him or add him on discord.
so i did that.
the "support worker" told me, that i should provide screenshots of the conversation.
i did that.
then he asked this: May I have a screenshot of your purchased history list so I can program it and scan if it's been used legally and include your name purchase history.
[Edit] they searched for a valve employee and made a discord account with the same name, so that it looks legit on first sight.
that was the point where i was sure that this is sketchy. ok, ok, i should have known better that support doesn't communicate via direct messages with steam users.
i think they hoped for credit card information on the page of the purchase history.
just want to let you know, that there are people doing this stuff at the moment.
