Wait for a Game of the Year sale. More expensive to get Bethesda DLCs by themselves that in a pack.

I bought the goty for 2.50£, now it's on steam for 5.09£ so you could have saved a bit if you had bought couple of days ago. You must have the dlcs, theyr worth it, and you will only get half the fun without them.
P.S i think there is a mod that makes vanilla Fallout 3 open world-ended if you want to keep playing after beating the game without dlcs. But i'm not sure if it's still there, because mostly everyone plays with dlcs

I bought the Game of the Year Edition a while back and just bought the base game a couple days ago during this sale. I know it sounds funny, but I wanted a complete version with everything and a version of just the base game in its original form. The DLCs are quite good, so assuming you only want to buy one version I'd wait and get the GOTY. You'll save money in the long run.

Wait for the GOTY edition to go on sale. You'll regret not having the DLC (if you enjoyed the base game)

the DLC is so worth it

In my opinion, if you really want Fallout 3 buy it now because you can play it for a long amount of time. but at least, buy the Broken Steel dlc that allows you to play (and explore) after the end of the normal game and really ends the story itself.

I didn't liked the DLCs... Base game is fine in my opinion.

I quite liked the Fallout 3 DLC. Operation Anchorage wasn't great, but it's not long and worth at least one play through. Broken Steel just continues after the end of the main Fallout 3 quest, it doesn't change the ending. I too liked Fallout NV better as a game, but liked the setting of Fallout 3. Out of all the Fallout DLC, The Pitt was my favorite. If you have Fallout NV and all its DLC, you might as well get Fallout 3 GOTY and use Tale of Two Wastelands. If you don't know what that is, it lets you import Fallout 3 into the updated Fallout NV engine and use it's features and mods.
You don't need a mod to change the level cap, it can be done with a console command. Even Vanilla FO3's (no DLC) level cap of 30 you can almost max out all skills without trying. It's possible to max everything if you go by a guide and collect all the skill books and bobble-heads. Broken Steel ups the level cap to 50, and unless you play a low INT character, you can max everything before 50, which can lead to a bug of being stuck in the level up screen because you can't close it until you spend all of your skill points. The last time I played, I used a mod that reduced the level cap back to 30, lowered the skill points per level and made it like the original Fallout where you only got a perk every 3rd level.

the game is self is worth what you can pay for it, the DLC are pretty good but honestly if money is a problem get it without the DLC and mod the fuck out of it , more content no extra cost, Simple and soooo fun.

I would suggest you to wait until winter sale for GOTY - it will cost probably only 5€. 5€ still dirt cheap for Fallout 3 and for it's infinite potential with mods, plus I'm sure you can save up another 2.5€ in the next month :)
Legit Reasons:
If you buy base game now, and you ever plan to buy DLCs, they will cost more than would cost to buy the GOTY. (so, you pay for GOTY + base game)
If you plan to use mods, you'll probably need the DLCs. Quite a few mods require to have certain DLCs installed, as they use it's new textures, items and whatnot.

If you want the game then get GOTY, I'm sure you'll get a good deal when the christmas sale comes.

Fallout 3 is a great game even without any DLC, and to be honest I overplayed it before I got around to exploring the DLC expanded content (gotta love rich open-world games!). It's really worth more than bargain bin prices, but that's the way that sales go I guess.
I would suggest waiting until the steam christmas sales and get all the DLC to go with it (and perhaps New Vegas, the standalone follow-up game). Not because I can really vouch for the DLC content, but because you can probably get it at an awesome price. Though really if the DLC isn't important to you, you can swipe the base game now, and then perhaps buy the DLC in the christmas sale.
Either way, it's a good purchase, and this is coming from someone who didn't like the meandering sandbox open-world style of games much~

If you haven't bought it yet, I have to ask what is your operating system?

Hey all, confusing topic title, but basically my question is should I get Fallout 3, which Enhanced Steam is telling me is the cheapest it has ever been. The problem is that $2.49 is at the upper end of my vague "max price to get cheap game" limit. The main question is that should I wait for a better deal on the GOTY edition (It'll happen some day!)? Are any of the DLC really worth it? I played Fallout 3 ages ago, and played NV recently, which made me remember that while NV had a better story, I preferred the Capital Wasteland to the Mojave. People have complained that the normal Fallout 3 has a stupid ending, and that Broken Steel kinda fixes that, but I didn't mind the ending of Fallout 3. The biggest thing though would be whether there are mods to up the level cap, or is that only possible through the DLC?
