Of this giveaway for Marvel vs Capcom Infinite
Or whatever.

My favourite franchise is Tekken, though I'm not so much a fan of DLC'ing of Tekken 7 (but so many fighting games do it)
(Tekken 6 would probably be my favourite, followed closely by Tekken Tag)

I liked VF5 on PS3, had a great cast of characters, and the gameplay was easy to get into. As a franchise though, I never played it much.

It's a good thing then that Yakuza 6 is coming to Steam soon! You can play VF5 at the arcades. VF2 is already on Yakuza:LaD. My fav of the series though is VF4:Evo. It's the definition of 'Easy to learn, hard to master' :)

I haven't played any Yakuza games yet.
I have Yakuza 0 installed ready as one of about a dozen games on my shortlist to play in the next few months though.

back in ye olden days I preferred Mortal Kombat (1-3) over Street Fighter 2, when those were the major series. I also liked the x-men and marvel games as I used to read those comics, but while the superpowers were fun, the fighting felt like a street fighter reskin. Tekken was the first truly good 3D fighter, but SoulCalibur blew it away - it was faster, smoother, and it was a lot easier to feel totally bad-ass. With the reboot of Mortal Kombat, I'm back to enjoying them - especially as it's my daughter's favorite games: she started with Injustice (1 & 2), but prefers MK11. She also plays 10, but not 9, becuase nobody's wearing any clothes in that game

My son prefers smash brothers.

Just because lots of fighting games do it, doesn't mean we should be ok with it. :T

The only fighting games I've played (seriously-ish) were Skullgirls and Acceleration of SUGURI 2 (yeah, I know it doesn't look like a fighting game at first glance, but it totally is) and I guess my favourite is... none? I might kinda not like the genre. T.T

I mean- It's fun at the start, but then comes a point where every fight is either against a terminator who plays the game every day and stomps you into mush or someone less experienced than you whom you stomp into mush. Honestly, I find both of those scenarios really unsatisfying.
And it feels like progress just grinds to a halt and I'd never have the seemingly superhuman reflexes and prediction abilities the terminators have to play on an even level with them and make things interesting again. :/

Not accepting it. I was pointing out that many new fighting games suffer from the DLC-to-better-your-game-experience rubbish

Narutimetto Hero!

Even though i don't play nor like fighting games much, i liked them as a kid. It was really fun playing MKIII, KoF 97-98 or Tekken 2-3 at arcade against friends or some random other kids. Among them, King of Fighters series would've my pick.

But as a gamer, i kinda feel sadness and disgust seeing greedy DLC-fest installments like MKX & MK11, Street Fighter V or Tekken 7.

I guess they gotta make money, but the DLC-Policy in fighting games is **** (oh well, there are a lot of games, where it is the same)

I enjoy the gory extravanganza of Mortal Kombat (and I'm a Marvel comics kid so I can't resist these) but Tekken is the best in every aspect really. For the combat, the elegance of it, and the pure fun.
But yeah the DLC mania has to stop, honestly. First it was extra skins, then bonus characters, then moves (WTF?) and now whole game modes have to paid for when you already bought the game. If they're going to make it F2P, then fine, extra and micro-transactions, as much as I hate them, are borderline acceptable but in expensive games? Nah.

I'll be honest, I'm not great at fighting games, but I do like mucking around with them from time to time...

Generally I recommend Tekken (for everyone, lol). but bias aside for now...
At a quick glance you have Street Fighter IV, Street Fighter V, King of Fighters XIV, Injustice, and Dragon Ball Z Kakarot.

Of these, I'd probably not recommend that particular DBZ game for a pure fighting-only experience. I'm also a SF n00b - it's one of those fighting games I really suck at, but it has some cool characters (my favourite is Ibuki, but generally Ryu or Ken are the best starters to try). I haven't played SFV, so can't say which of those is better. King of Fighters is pretty fun - and has a 3-on-3 matchplay which makes it kinda unique. It also has a pretty big roster of characters (my favourite is probably Leona).
Injustice - it's an odd one - DC universe mashed with a Mortal Kombat style play (made by the same devs, afaik). Fun if you wanna try DC characters, but not something I would play much of, cos it feels kinda rigid compare to most fighting games I enjoy. I still kinda recommend it for the story though.
If you want eye candy or cuteness, and don't mind being judged, there are fighting games that are all girls as well, such as Arcana Heart, Nitroplus Blasterz, Skullgirls, and of course Dead or Alive (which is actually a fun fighting game, the deep plot is just a bonus).

Thank you for the detailed write up!
I'll have to look more into all these games and see what looks most appealing to try get into :) (I'm not sure it matters that much about being judged!) I also didn't realise I had that many to begin with.. :0
I'll have to make it a goal for next year to play one and see how I go!

Try Injustice if you wanna story-based fighter. It's not long to beat. And then if you like the combat in that one, you can play it a bit more for the extra stuff.

I voted MK, because I destroyed literally 2 keyboards with MK4, but equally I like Injustice, since I finally can kick Superman and Batman's a$$es (Doomsday FTW)

As the SFIV narrator would say... "It's the battle of the century! Bump!"

Okay, I think the narration was actually slightly different, but close enough. ;)
