I recently won a humble frozenbyte bundle, and the person is trying to give me a key to activate it on steam. However a few keys he has given me failed to go through steam, as they were duplicates. I also read a thread here stating that CD keys can be used to steal your account, so I'm a little uneasy about this guy, as this is his first giveaway. However i also read somewhere that humbles are generally safe.

So, in your opinion, would it be safe to use? thanks in advance

some people did give away the same HIB key to all of their winners, which means only one of them can redeem it, and the contributor deserves punishment. that does not mean everyone does it this way, though. so the only way to know if its safe or not is to try.

I don't think, that based on one game, he can steal your account. If you have other games, purchased with your card or so, you're on pretty dry ground :)

In any case, you can just link them the give-away or so, should be no problem!

They can't steal your account, but they can get your account frozen/closed by Valve, if they claim the cd-key later on, with the proof of a physical copy.
This is of course not the case with Humble Bundles, since there are no physical copies.

If there is any chance of someone managing to 'steal' your account with a CD key, it would only be with a physical CD key (like that out of a box). Any digital key you use really can't have ownership established because you can't send in a picture of the CD key, game box, and details about a ticket.

I dont know how others do it, but i send the humble bundle link that is provided when purchasing the bundle as a gift. That way the user can get the games on steam, onlive, desura, or just download the DRM free exe of the game provided in the bundle. I send the link because the bundles usually include sound tracks and games that aren't on steam yet or will be in time. In addition, im not sure if the games are mac friendly through steam, but the bundle includes versions that work on mac and linux.

Ideally, when you find out that you win, I think the gifter should send this link, because otherwise he/she isn't giving you the whole bundle (ie. Humble bundle 2 gifts should also include humble bundle 1 thus it should be 10 or 11 games rather than 5 or 6).

If you do get an email with a link, the link should direct you to humble bundle and ask for your name and email. Fill that out and you'll get another email with the link to everything (KEEP THAT LINK FOREVER.)

I believe that the only way he can steal your account is with a retail copy of a Game cd key. I would not redeem individual game keys if he gave them too but the single humble bundle key should be fine.
