Should I just let this game go?
Maybe The Nations.
I recommend that you follow the community of the game indicated by the hbarkas btw. It looks like the description you made and it is very likely that someone in the group will share screenshots or comment on the game you are looking for (at least I've seen it happen in some other communities, with players commenting or sharing old games in the same style).

If you can describe it in a bit more detail you'll have more chance of finding it. What kind of viewpoint was it? What artstyle was it? As in, was the camera side-on in a 2D management style game? Was it vaguely like Terraria? Was it turn based and isometric? Was it full 3D and RTS-like? Were there any noteworthy little cutscenes or character designs that stood out? etc
Without any other details, the only thing that comes to mind is Gnomoria, but while I own it, I haven't pulled it out of my backlog yet.

The POV was top-down/isometric, not like Terraria nor turn-based but more like The Nations and Settlers 2 which were mentioned here earlier.
Don't think it was full 3D though and maybe RTS-like.
nah Gnomoria isn't it, too bare bones style-wise

That one helps for sure, but there's also the one dedicated to games https://www.reddit.com/r/tipofmyjoystick/.

All I can really think of is one of the Populus or Settlers games.

Craft the World - too new
Dwarf Fortress - not cartoony
Brave Dwarves? (2001)
Brave Dwarves 2 (2002) (I see mushrooms and berries - and up down levels)
Brave Dwarves 2 Gold (2003)

I have this vague memory of a really fun or at least it was back then game where you managed a small group of gnomes/dwarves and maybe other creatures? and they'd scavenge the forest for mushrooms and berries I think.
They'd also work in mines and produce gold and advance their little settlement.
This was before 2010 but when exactly I don't know, some time between 2004 and 2007 is the most specific timeframe I can recall.
It was 3D AFAIK with cartoonish graphics and I think I was playing the demo version of it back then, but it was pretty fun and I've been trying to know its name by trying all types of search queries on search engines and going through old game archives but that's almost impossible to achieve in one's lifetime..
So I'd be glad if anybody had any suggestions for what that game may be!
Here's a lil sth, but I'd give my left toe right toe might be a bonus for speed for anyone who tells me what that game was!
