It is, there is software for using it, and emulating a 360 / XInput controller in games.

Yes use this drivers
http://forums.pcsx2.net/Thread-XInput-Wrapper-for-DS3-and-Play-com-USB-Dual-DS2-Controller
valid for PS3 and PS4 SONY brand controllers, my suggestion using with USB, not with Bluetooth, it makes Windows see the controllers as if they were from X360, they work as plug and play after you install this correctly. Work to me, no problems at all, you only have to memorize that X is A, Circle is B, etc

I have used them in the past with no mayor problems.
My advice (unless there is something better nowadays):
Install the drivers included with MotioninJoy, and then use Better DS3 as a managing tool.
A couple of years ago, MotioninJoy used to connect to the internet and report your activity to let you manage the configuration.

then you must be doing something wrong Xd, some drivers also require reboot after installing, but should work even if you don't do it.
I would install the drivers I said, just follow the instructions there, but you can try another thing > the easiest way is motionjoy but not the best way, also you can try this https://code.google.com/p/x360ce/ you just need to put the file in the game folder an execute it. Search on YouTube is you have problems installing, but they put a tutorial on the downloading page, so should not be any problems.

Actually it takes like 5min to install the drivers I said and Windows detects your controllers as an X360 one everytime you connect it, or the Motionjoy ones :( and PS3 controllers are a way better for fighting and platform games, and 2D Japanese shooters like Danmaku, Touhou, etc.
I even like PS3 controllers more than X360 ones for lots of games, the only bad is the size.

Well my friend had same problems when he liked to make his PS3 controllers work like the X360 ones, but when I was at his house I just did it in 5 min, so yeah the only thing I can help you since I can't come to your house is, just follow the instructions XD. I use Windows 8, he uses Windows 7, and installation was exactly the same :S

I bought a 3rd party PS3 controller for $15 specifically for using it on PC. It gave me way to much of a headache, sure Xpadder worked; but a lot of times it was a just a pain in the crack to setup. And X360CE also had it's fair share of problems on it's side too.
In the end I simply just ended up buying a Xbox 360 controller. Best decision ever. Just make sure you buy the wired one.

Yeah third party(this means not from Sony) PS3 controllers work like a generic PC controller.
But I have one controller like this too, Hori Gem Pad, PS3 version, just got it for 12€, it has a very good Dpad, and the X360 version would cost me double the price. But in most of the games I actually use this controller I can just go and configure buttons in options. But for other games I just use my X360 one.
