How do I activate emoticons?

I just got a emoticon and it is in my inventory but I don't have a clue how to use it in chat, please help

Just type the name in the chat. For example I got the Ham Shank from Don't Starve so I type in :dsham:

I got the orange portal emoticon, but when I type :p2orange: it just shows up as :p2orange:, not as an orange portal. Is that normal? Do they see the emoticon?
EDIT: I got it to work, I had to restart stem for it to show

I am currently going through the same problem. Any emoticon I type in and know of only shows up in :blahblahblah: My 2 questions are:
1.) How does one unlock an emoticon for any particular game
2.) "EDIT: I got it to work, I had to restart stem for it to show." Does this mean logging OUT of ones' Steam client and then logging BACK IN? No rebooting of one's computer?

Restarting the Steam client for that matter, your computer doesn't require one.
You unlock these emoticons by crafting badges, which usually grants one background and one emoticon of the game you used to craft a badge from. (And a coupon for a random game)

Read the FAQ. Anywhere on steam where you can type, you will see a new button. Click on that to find them. The emote has to be in your inventory.
