IMO; I like to have badges for the games I really like... Or if they mean something to me... As for the levels, showcases are fine, but nothing special... For profile backgrounds, it's much cheaper to buy the wanted background than trading cards...

So, point of steam levels... There is no real point... Some people just like collecting... There is pretty much no point in Steam achievements, but people like them, and that is fine... I usually earn a little bit of money with trading cards to buy new games, so I won't complain... xD

The trading cards are for raising your level. If you don't care about your lvl you can just sell them and get steam money. The level also increase the amount of friends you can have (which almost no one ever gets even close to the cap.). But other than that, yeah, it's not really worth anything. Some people think it's fun, just like any game would. Some see as a challenge, like an achievement. Some people just don't care. But there is no real "objective" other than making money where people are willing to spend. Also, note that a % of the sale of the cards go to the developers.
