My grandmother died tonight (May 2nd). She was 13.5 years old when she joined the peoples defense force (later called Partisans) in response to Nazi invasion of our country in 1941. Somehow she ended up fighting in the first lines (1st Proletarian Division), survived the most f*cked up situations, like Battle of Neretva, Battle of Sutjeska, Belgrade offensive and Syrmian front, even though she lost her mother and more than a dozen of young relatives during the war, alongside some of her own toes. Once she had to hold to a horse in order to survive a wild river. Other time her uniform was full of holes but not one bullet scratched her. She lived like a warrior to her last day, which was not always easy since she had to survive the civil war in former Yugoslavia back in 1990's. She always wanted her medals to be shown at the funeral (something she talked about since I can remember) but they were lost during the said war, so there is nothing to show now.
I know it is stupid, but maybe these games can show to some kid that people like her lived in times we can imagine only in our nightmares. They fought and they won. Now she joined them once again, in order to fight that f*cker Hitler on the other side, like she did here so long ago.

I'm sorry to hear of your loss. The most valuable thing we leave behind, when we die, is the way in which we have touched the lives of others and affected them for the better. Perhaps it is some small consolation that your grandmother seems to have done that in her own life. She may be gone, but the impact of her life continues on.
