Kin ya say why? Naw, I kinda see why. First gen remade in splendid but not too-modern-as-to-be-icky tech, itself a precursor for a whole line of fantastic romhacks. Still, GSC will forever remain the unassailable ideal, and I mean in the original GBC incarnation. Nothing spells soul like that tileset and feeling of rural, myth and adventure filled region~

I am not a big Pokemon (game) guy and Fire Red seems like a very well balanced choice - nice visuals, nice tech, nice level of depth (relatively speaking), fine gameplay...
By GSC you mean Gold, Silver and Crystal? Well, those are nice but Fire Red just seems like the better overall choice if I had to pick one.
Anything after that Gen makes me go either: "Ugh the gameplay is only worse is nothing else" or "Why is it STILL the same damn game, with the same lame graphics on the 'same' damn handheld?".

Exactly my feelings on subsequent gens, except I'd also add that even the graphics seem to keep getting more and more...um...soulless and plain - and "mainstream" though I'm never sure if that words carries across all the toxic visionerism, retro-cyberpunk extremism and sheer bile I aim to spell with it ;p
Hey, on the merit, sure, FR actually IS the obvious, measured choice. I stated before that I idealize 2nd gen mostly for aesthetics and the particular atmosphere, which while hard for me to accurately describe, brings to mind, dunno, endless backpacking - cum - musha shugyou lite in laid-back, traditionally Japanese setting in regards to both artificial and natural locales. That serious desu talk for a kids' game ;p

Yeah, the graphics are upgraded but as a whole they are uninspired, I feel. Though your more eloquent phrasing is appropriate too, haha.
I do like me some measured choices. Remember: Optimal. :D
Well, I think most Pokemon games achieve some variant of that feeling; must be nostalgia as well, which is fair enough.
It's fun to over-analyze simple stuff.
