Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri.

I always liked the exploration the most out of the 4 Xs. Sadly it is usually most underplayed. Stellaris seems to spice it up the most from what I have seen. Sadly a bit too pricey currently. Distant worlds did pretty well on that front too.

Sins of a Solar Empire.

I think I spent the most time in total on Civ 1 and Colonization in my life :) Civ 5, although it has some more room to improve, is probably my overall favourite in the genre.

Honestly it is a hard call.

I would say the best one is probably Civ 4... But I enjoyed Galactic Civilizations more, it gave you a feel of being able to properly shape your faction. GC2 less so. One day I will learn of GC3.

I have never played Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri. I guess I need 2. With all the add on Civ V is my favorite and I played them all from 2 on

For Sci-Fi easily Star Wars:Rebellion(1998)

Thea: The Awakening. Although, It's not a traditional 4x it's a brilliant game
